Let's kill two birds with one stone.

1) "After Earth" the movie.

2) Brit Marling the writer, producer, actress, smoke show. For instance writer of The OA. Producer of a few. Actress in the OA, Baylon, I, Orgins, The Better Angels, The East, Another Earth, etc.

Smoke show is in ...

My guess is he’s implying that Brit Marling owes her entire career to fricking Harvey Weinstein. Almost any A-List Actress in the past 30 years has had to sleep with Harvey Weinstein. Even Gwyneth Paltrow being descended from Hollywood Royalty had to frick him.

Not trying to tell you anything. You're trying to read too much into it.

Another Earth is an interesting movie ... the science especially. You know from where the idea for the story stems, do you not?

Brit Marling has been a talent since her early 20s. She's an excellent actress, writer, producer and a smoke show. I'm not a fan of her politics, or at least what her politics appear to be, but she is a strong, intelligent, beautiful woman.

The picture has a double meaning I guess. Illustrates her beauty and does imply her telling Harvey to go frick himself. One of the few who did.

You should maybe read this, I dunno ... Brit Marling: The Economics of Descent

It's a good movie. Slow burn, perhaps even more so than your average slow burn movie, so definitely not for everyone. Mind you, the actual science is abominable. It's more a philosophical movie with shades of Everett quantum mechanics than actual sci-fi. Had the scenario in question actually occurred, gravitational and tidal forces would equal an extinction-level event long before the planets got that close.

All the same, I do like the movie very much and own the Blu-Ray. It's an example of what independent movies should be.

You started a thread and aren't trying to tell us anything? That's not how this works. You need to be a little coherent. For example, you'd be confused if I just started a thread titled "Star Wars" and the body of my first post was just "Last Jedi, Empire, Prequels. Mark Hammil was a great actor", Then put a picture with Carrie Fisher and Weinstein side by side.

Yep ... totally agree on the science. Was wondering if someone would catch that.

They made another play on the idea, in a more conceivable fashion, in another movie I saw recently but I cannot remember the name of the movie ... had that german guy in it who was the sniper hero in Inglorious Basterds. He's the lead in The Alienist. Wait, it was Cloverfield something or other ... that's it. The Cloverfield Paradox.

I don't think I actually caught what you were saying because, while I've seen commercials for it, I haven't actually watched "The Cloverfield Paradox." Or the Cloverfield movie, for that matter. I should probably check the show out, since IMDb uses the words "alternate reality" and that's been a hook for me since first watching "Twilight Zone" and "Tales from the Darkside" in syndication as a kid.

A question...since you've apparently watched Marling in "I, Origins," can you give me an idea what it's like? I saw it while checking up on Marling's filmography (she's pretty, as you said, and I liked her understated acting) and it's really hard to figure it out. I do like philosophical movies, but only intelligent ones. Half the reviews rave over it, but the other half hint that it's more...Scientology / Deepak Chopra /Hare Krishna faux philosophy rather than a serious thought-provoking film for people who don't worship crystals and ancient aliens.

(Judging from the dearth of replies in this thread, not many people have watched "Another Earth." A pity, because it's a movie with some discussion potential.)

Yeah okay so 'I, Origins' is multi-layered.

Rather than spoiling it for you I'll simply say that it's one of those you need to watch two or three times to really get it.

The basic premise is that this doctor, Michael Pitt the guy from Boardwalk Empire and that old Sandra Bullock movie about a murder ... he's a doctor, scientist type, who is trying to disprove creationism ... well, first, remember about ten years ago or so where there was real debate about creationism vs evolution because, as it is claimed by creationists there is no explanation for the evolution of the human eye.

Remember that?

The entire debate led to the whole 'intelligent design' faction of which I consider myself to be somewhat of a follower today.

So anyways, back to the premise of the movie, which was written and produced in a timely manner in an effort to take advantage of the whole evolution of the human eye debate ... Pitt's character is trying to prove that the human eye did indeed evolve through the standard human evolutionary model.

On the other hand there are religions, and peoples, who believe the eye is the window to the soul. Agreed?

Combine those two disciplines and imagine a series of events that merge the two in an almost karmic fashion and you've got the movie I, Origins.

I thoroughly enjoyed it ... made total sense to me, albeit you'll naturally question some aspects of the plot, with a very catchy surprise ending after a series of sometimes creepy, sometimes enlightening, timeline of events, or better yet ... happenings. One unexpected thing leads to another.

It has a lower budget M. Night Shyamalan (sp) feel to it ... in a documdrama sort of way.

It's worth watching IMHO, more than once because you catch things you missed the first time around that makes other things make more sense with regard to the storyline.

I'll say this about the movie. My wife has a particularly beautiful set of emerald green green with a splash of turquoise eyes. Everyone has always commented about them ... even people that meet her for the first time, and I admit I always dated dark haired green or blue eyed women even before I met her years ago. But her eyes were something special and then I fell for the rest of her ... 6' tall and leggy, skinny ankles and big boobs and a great smile ... the eyes just became part of the package after awhile.

Over the years I guess I'd gotten used to her eyes although, inevitably, someone was always commenting about them ... even old friends would casually be speaking with us in casual settings and still someone would remark about my wife's eyes if she, or they, got a little tipsy. To me ... I guess I took them for granted.

Well, after seeing this movie it changed everything for me and I became fascinated all over again with her eyes. I started drawing them and taking pictures of them and staring at them and I even commissioned a painting, done by a very well known artist, of her eyes that I took when we were visiting the Almalfi Coast a couple of years ago ... inside the Blue Grotto, something special happened to her eyes there. They popped ... the irises, the color, every little detail.

That's how the movie affected me ... among other things, being a spiritual but someone intellectual observer of this life we are all living. The movie is about life. It also caused me to take pause and rethink the whole matrix/construct idea ... although probably not in the way most would assume.

Anyways, so yeah, the movie is different. It'll have you paying much more attention to a person's eyes and looking into them a little bit deeper ... if you are so inclined to deep thought - which Brit Marling's flicks tend to lend themselves to anyway.

(It's a great movie to discuss under a good buzz and an open fire with like-minded friends.)

Now, at the same time this is not one of the movies she had total control over ... she was chosen for her part for her acting chops and she played her character well probably because she is, irl, incredibly cerebral and beautiful at the same time. She is a supporting cast member ... Pitt is the lead.

I hope that helps peak your interest. It's a deep flick, even a little boring at first ... but it takes-off after the elevator scene, I'll just leave it at that and hope you watch it and come back with your review. I am interested in your take.

Thank you for the thorough answer (and nice story about your wife.) I'll grab it next time I order some movies, which should be in the next couple weeks or so. I don't mind slow just so long as there's a payoff by the end of the movie.
