Well, if you have any questions, that is what this thread is for.
Since you haven't watched either, at least as far as your list establishes, my main question would have to wait. When I decided to dip my toes into the field of anime (actually, I just remembered I had already watched "Paprika" because of its supposed (not really) connection to "Inception") I look at quite a few until I saw ones that sounded like I'd enjoy them. So my question would be, what other movies with similar themes and imagery could people recommend? The hard part is that I can't really set up any other parameters than "These are what I've seen and enjoyed" and "I like what I like." I like "Spirited Away" for the story and the mood and the sense of otherworldliness, and Koto no ha no niwa, which appears to translate as "Garden of Words" for the incredible artistry and mood. The main problem I'm having in finding others is that most of the ones in a similar vein appear to be incredibly depressing. I'm looking for stuff I can watch snuggled up with the wife and not want to kill myself afterwards.

What kind of movies or shows do you enjoy in general? Non animated, or other styles of animation.

I've only seen two anime: "Spirited Away" and something called "Koto no ha no niwa". I have no idea what people think of them, but I rather liked them. Neither indulged in some of the more outre aspects of anime that the average non-anime fan tends to associate with the genre.
If you like "Spirited Away" and are interested in watching more anime then you should check out Princess Mononoke. Same director.

Howl's Moving Castle (I'd recommend this first)
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind

Sounds to me like you need to look into all of Hayao Miyazaki's works.

I like all sorts, so I guess the real question is what I'm hoping for in a new anime, since if I were automatically predisposed to enjoy anime on its own merits, I'd have started exploring a long time ago. Essentially, I'm looking for atmospheric movies that are also thought-provoking (like, say, "Blade Runner"). I don't mind action at all if it serves the plot, but it's not really high on my list of priorities. Essentially, I'm looking for things that anime as a genre can do spectacularly in ways that live-action struggles with. Any ideas?
For those of you suggesting Hayao Miyazak, I think you're probably right -- I should go ahead and check out his other stuff. I'd already lingered over the Nausicaa one while surfing Amazon, but didn't realize it was by the same person. Thanks.
Edit: Also recognize the title of "Princess Monoke" too, so thanks for that suggestion as well.

You also mentioned Paprika and that you like thought provoking stuff, you might want to look up Satoshi Kon's other stuff too. Perfect Blue is older, but I like it a lot when I saw it. Millenium Actress and Paranoia Agent also.

So, new rec for this thread.
Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?
Yea, long name, but if you liked the 1st half of Sword Art Online, this is basically what I think to be a better version of that.
It is only 13 episodes. Released this year, but the 1st season is great.
Check it out if you like the "weakling fights to prove himself and become the hero" storyline.

75 pages and no love for Venus Wars? It's a movie, not a series, but it's worth watching if you've got two free hours. One of the few where the English dub is actually better than the original Japanese, IMO.
A few other things not listed in the OP that I'd recommend (kind of older than most of the stuff in this thread, I think, but still entertaining):
- the older Dominion Tank Police OVAs (explosions, tanks, cat girl sisters with guns) the English dub is sentimentally good, but in a cheesy way)
- the Urusei Yatsura TV series (whacky alien comedy, with Lum) better than the movies IMO, but it's not necessarily a continuous story and there's a hell of a lot of it)
- the Dirty Pair TV series (guns, spaceships, lasers, explosions, girls, etc)

I did really enjoy the first half of SAO. Really wish they hadn't rushed it.

Wasn't sure if this was old or not, but I just saw that there's a psycho-pass movie online. I thought both of the seasons were pretty damn good.

Hey Scrufficans.
Have you seen World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman?
Had some weird concepts(imagine that, a Japanese show with weird concepts), but I enjoyed it.
On episode 10 of Dungeon(title too long). If you liked it and SAO, I think you would really like World Break. A harem action similar to both of those.
I don't understand the harem obsession in Japan, but it makes me want to visit.

You're gonna say that, and then not give us the premise?

Sorry Scruffy. After years of Futurama, feels like I know ya.
