yea the last 10 chapters finally explained why. it has do with his mother and where the hollow inside ichigo came from. i would go into it but its hard to explain. and i dont feel like writing a book

you could pick up the manga where the anime left off. the anime followed the manga expect for filler seasons.

i think chapter 479 is where the anime left off. i think it ended after the fullbring arc. the next arc starts off slow but it picks up big time.

So zangetsu is the manifestation of his Quincy powers.
Which means Shirosaki was a manifestation of his hollow and shinigami powers.

Why not reading the real version of the show you're watching. 9 times out of 10, it's better than the anime.
And if you actually want to get into manga, I have some real good recommendations.

I've only ever read Berserk and Akira (which is a good bit different than the movie btw). At some point I plan to read the Lone Wolf & Cub. Maybe Vagabond and Vinland Saga at some point too.

I've never been much into
romance, at least not with anime.
I don't mind tragedy.
Not too sure what "mature-ness" means, but there isn't much I can't tolerate.
I tend towards action, adventure, horror, scifi, espionage, etc., when I choose anime.

Because manga is a lot of cheaper and you can generally get away from more, a lot of great manga also shows some more. Not sure of great phrase for it outside of ecchi.
ETA: One of my favorites of all time and something that is a great read for someone new. It's very interesting and only 8 chapters long. LINK
