other than porcupines, what small animals out there have enough fat to sustain you? eating rabbits won't cut it.

Probably beaver, badgers, wolverines, river otters etc. if available.

It'd take a bigger pair than what I've got to go after one of those with a slingshot.

regardless, you have to kill big game to win. The last 3 winners shot big game, and won easily despite the history channel trying to show us drama like they weren't going to win. The second they make that kill and secure that meat, they've won.

They are going to run out of food to forage for and small game to hunt for after a month or so out there. ALl of that small stuff is just to get you by until you make the big kill, and if you don't make the big kill, all you're going to be doing is suffering once the snow starts until you have to tap out.

spend your time on a nice warm shelter that you can live in once the snow starts. stack up your firewood. traps for small game and a gill net should be your passive hunting, and every other waking moment should be spent on securing big game.

After 8 seasons, everyone has to have learned by now that fishing is your most guaranteed resource. Mastering every different high percentage fishing idea is a great way to spend your 1st 45 days. Fish traps, trot lines, making your own gill net (since apprently taking 1 isn't allowed this seasons), constructing a sturdy "dock" to walk out once it gets colder/shore ices up, that rubberband floating paddle board fishing boat thing, & more. Man, I'd like to even come up with a log + stones pen area that brings fish in but they can't get out.

Also, 1 of my clothing items would surely be high chest insulated waders.

If you are fortunate to land a good fishing spot then I agree. With that said, Big Game kills usually wins.

Big Game kills allow you to save so much energy that you can focus on your shelter and campsite. Also, if you are "hardcore" enough to score a big kill then you probably have the mental fortitude to handle the isolation. Several good fishermen tapped because they got homesick.

This isn't a secret, or even an opinion at the moment.
there's only been 3 contestants to make a big game kill, and those are the last 3 winners.

The fishing is fine until it's too cold to do anything, and then it's just a waiting game for everyone to tap out, and the guy with the big game kill gets to eat every single day while others don't.
unless you find a fishing spot where you're lucky enough to catch a bunch of large fish that you can smoke and store, which we've yet to see anyoen be able to do, big game is the only way to guarantee you a very high chance at winning.
If we ever see two people make big game kills, the one that will lose will be the one that taps out from loneliness, not lack of food.

In general I agree with you however-

To be fair Jordan Jonas did both. History Channel didn't show how many fish he had stored because they were trying to build drama. Jordan would have been there for a long time if second place kept going.

I'm not sure what big game is available and legal this season, but I'd love to see someone get a bear one season.

I hate pretty much all reality TV, but all the guys in our office started watching this and we all binged pretty much every season. This really is a great show.

quote:

What 10 items would you take?

- tarp
- sleeping bag
- pot
- flint. you're just an idiot if you don't bring this.
- recurve/arrows (depending on locations wildlife). drives me nuts when idiots who don't know how to show a bow bring a bow and arrows.
- gil net
- trapping wire
- saw
- hunting knife
- fishing line/hooks

Food is probably beef jerky x 2. Although I thought they gave you more than 2 food items for free. One episode said they all got trail mix as well.

There's definitely a toss up on a few of them. A shovel would be nice but I think I'd take the saw and knife over it. Not having toothpaste would drive me absolutely nuts, but if I'm going on the show I think catching fish is more important than clean teeth.

In Season 3, Dave Nessia was medically pulled due to inadequate caloric intake, his systolic pressure barely exceeded his diastolic pressure (80/60 mmHg), putting him in danger of death due to inadequate perfusion of the internal organs. He had been in starvation mode for so long, even though he left with 33 halves of dried fish still ready to eat, he was surviving with the thought of only eating half a fish every other day. (Copied from Wiki)

It wasn't because of lack of food.

As soon as someone starts building a boat, they should just go pick him up. Game over.

The Native American dude and the young guy in one of the earlier seasons (I think he was the first to build a boat and the first to do a chimney) were both really really good and built high quality boats, but they wasted too much time and energy on them. You can build a top notch boat but it's still only going to hurt you in the long run.

I'd go with most of the standard as everyone else. But I'd probably do a Slingshot over a bow and arrow. I'd concentrate on small animals and birds. Might forgot the fishing too.

yep.
They also didn't show the huge amounts of roots, berries and mushrooms that Roland had stored up. He also had a bunch of fish stored.

Not sure I've ever seen anyone get a kill before they even make a shelter. Lol. I like this guy.

Glad to see they have more food opportunities. Squirrels, Grouse and they are allowed to hunt bear.

Finding that abandoned trap was a helluva score.

Igor seems to be the one most likely to tap first from what I'm seeing.

Glad to see a much better situation as far as food is concerned.

I would petition to bring a large container of Tony’s instead of salt.
