It's the sound from the source material, Zero Hour, which is a prop plane.
TCM once played both back to back many years ago. It was a fun double feature.

I was on a USAR task force that deployed to the Pentagon on 9/11. We got there in the evening and they already had a dozen light plants running. They put off an eerie glow as we approached the last corner before we could see the damage.

I used that line when the damage came into view. All of the rescuers and firemen were nervous as hell but they laughed hard at it.

However the hippy “Team Leader” that had been appointed by the Governor did not like it all.

And I’ve paused the boob scene ever since there was a pause button.

I was an adult when I first saw the topless scene. I had no idea that was in the movie and had seen it at least a dozen times, but every time had been on TBS or similar station.

Let me guess you didn’t get the part where she blows the tube just below the belt line to keep the autopilot engaged. The autopilot then smiles and the scene cuts to the stewardess and the autopilot smoking a cigarette after.

No lie, as a teen watching this I always thought he was an alcoholic and it only dawned on me years ago what the joke was

Absolutely love Airplane!!

Fun tidbit on the timeline.
My mom was taking me to oakwood mall on the westbank of NO to see Empire strikes Back

My older sister saw some friends and saw Airplane instead with them

Both winner movies imo

Roger-Rodger, What's our Vector-Victor, do we have Clearance-Clarence?

This line tickles me to death every time I hear it!

Possibly my most quoted movie line of all time. I say it just about every time something goes haywire at work.
