There are a lot of performers that tend to play characters that are pretty bad eggs. Every once in a while we will get surprised and they knock it out of the park playing a good character.
Can you think of any?
Gary Oldman is an actor that seems to play a lot of dark characters. His playing Sirus Black and Commissioner Gordon were nice changes of pace.

Wilford Brimley was a bad guy more often than not, but he played the grandfather in Our House.

Not that he always played a Pyscho...
But I was totally taken aback when I saw Anthony Perkins in Phaedra.
I just couldn't stop seeing him as Norman Bates on the screen.

Kiefer Sutherland played almost exclusively bad guys until 24. Was weird to see him as the good guy.

When I was a kid Michael Caine only played bad guys. Then he win for Cider House Rules and became Alfred and loveable old grandpas.

Many years ago after the Andy Griffith Show had run its course, he played a bad guy in a movie (I do not recall the name..). After growing up on him in the TV series, it was really weird.
ETA: The made for TV movie was called Savages from 1974.

More years ago than that Fred MacMurray played some bad guys then was Dad on My Three Sons.
He was the weaselly guy in The Caine Mutiny and some other bad guys in smaller stuff.

Tony Curtis - I always think of him when he’s in Some Like it Hot - but the other day I saw the movie where he plays the Boston Strangler
Also - Raymond Burr - I always think of him as Perry Mason but he’s been a ton of bad guys too

Glenn Close is probably best known for playing evil characters, but she’s portrayed her fair share of good ones as well. On the flip side, Mary Tyler Moore went completely against type as the cold, unloving mother of a suicidal son in Ordinary People. She was phenomenal in the role and I think it’s the only time she ever played a character who was “bad.”

Opposite for this one, but I really like the movie "What Lies Beneath" because Harrison Ford ended up being the bad guy. Can't recall another movie of his where that's the case.

Leslie Nielson played mostly bad guys when he was younger. I imagine someone old enough would have been shocked the first time they saw him in Police Squad and Naked Gun

How about Harry Morgan, playing opposite type of characters in the same t.v. series, M.A.S.H.!
Before appearing as the lovable father figure, Colonel Sherman T. Potter, he played the role of the abusive and ultimately crazy Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele in Season 3.

John Lithgow although it was sort of the other way around. I first knew about Lithgow from his comedic role as the alien Dick Solomon in Third Rock From The Sun. Than I found out later he was an actor known primarily for his villain roles in movies. Later, he played the Trinity Killer and creeped the hell out of me. Lithgow's such a phenomenal actor. He's equally effective as a hero or a villain and in comedic roles and dramatic roles. You can put him in any type of role and he'll do it exceptionally well, a true master at his craft.

Seeing Tom Berenger go from The Big Chill (good) to Platoon (bad) to Major League (good) was pretty mind-blowing

If you are mostly familiar with Lena Headey from playing Cersei on GoT it can be a surprise to see her playing Sarah Connor on the Sarah Connor Chronicles.
On the flip side, Jimmy Stewart (spoiler alert) played the bad guy in one of the Thin Man movies and did a darn good job of it too.
