I was really hoping this movie would be better. Great cast. Great songs. Great build up. I thought this would be a potential lock for Oscar, but now I’m not so sure.
There are so many questions that I have after watching this movie. It seemed so rush to get started and then dragged on to finish.
Isn’t it weird that on a drunken night, in a Hi Vee parking lot, he remembers 2 verses of a song from her and puts together an entire arrangement live the next night?
Shouldn’t he be wearing a helmet the entire movie since he is one brain cell away from being full blown retarded? I had heard a lot about him winning an Oscar but I thought you couldn’t win an Oscar going full retard.
Decent movie but not great. Just saying.

I enjoyed it bc I am a fan of good music in a movie. However, I have one main issue. A smaller issue is the pacing as you said, but the main issue is...

SPOILERS...

felt like a 5 minute conversation with her manager convinced him to kill himself. I’m not saying Jack had his shite together, but him being the most healthy we have seen him and one conversation ends his life. I didn’t like that turn.

Not saying it’s a better movie, but I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody better. Again, I’m a music fan and BR had a more interesting ride for me.

I dug the first half or so of the movie, and felt like the second half was weak.

But yeah, “decent movie, not great” seems about right.

Fair point, but they did spend the rest of the night together. It’s not like they each went home after the parking lot, so one could assume they kept talking about the song. Who knows

Don’t know where this came from. There are plenty fair criticisms of this movie, but I haven’t once read anything about his character almost being retarded

He had already tried to kill himself when he was a teenager. He was always a broken person walking that thin line. And it wasn’t the managers convo that pushed him over the edge, it was when Ally lied to him about not going on tour in Europe. He knew she cancelled because he couldn’t go with her and that she felt she had to look after him and I guess he realized he probably would end up screwing her career somehow

Just finished it myself. Bohemian Rhapsody was better by a country mile.

I think it got hyped since Bradley Cooper and Gaga were in it.

Just watch it again. Now you will just be able to think of Simple Jack in Tropic Thunder. Seriously, dude might have a 16 IQ.

Bohemian Rhapsody was a mediocre biopic outside of the Live Aid scene

I see that. But still not a reason to off himself. He apparently went 3+ decades without considering suicide. And btw, they just randomly threw in the 13 year old suicide story for the climax to make sense. No hints of suicide other than that 2 minute conversation with doctor.

2+ hours of a great story. But 4 minutes of screen time pushes this agenda. It just didn’t fit. He was a drunk. Not kill yourself drunk

Just finished and my mind was blown when I saw Andrew Dice Clay in the credits. I didn’t realize it was him during the movie.

I took that as it was his gift.

And that should tell you how bad A Star Is Born was.

It's the best movie of the year IMO.

I really enjoyed the Cooper Gaga connection. Yeah movie could have been better but you are catching 2 individuals going in 2 completely different directions in life at the same time.

I took it as the manager saying the next time he relapses he doesn’t need to be around her. As he was pulling out of the garage he finds a bottle of pills and gets fricked up in the truck. Him realizing he was a lost cause that will eventually kill her career is what did him in. At least how I took it.

This.

It was a fantastic story of a person that obviously spent decades self medicating a severe case of deppression.

Cooper should have won Best Actor. Sam Elliott should have won Best Supporting Actor. And Cooper should have won Best Director(that he wasn't even nominated for. L O fricking L) if for no other reason than the best portrayal of a live performance I've ever seen.

Bohemian Rhapsody was better for those who require simple entertainment and don't place much value on thinking, perspective, craft, the experience, etc.

I guess in that regard ASIB was more high-brow... for those of us with the intellect to understand.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a Wikipedia article of a bio pic. No deep dives into anything. I feel like I knew just as much about Freddie Mercury after the movie as I did before. Rami Malek did a great impression but there was nothing beyond that.

Completely agree, people who didn’t like it are dumbasses. Also, some over look Sam Elliot’s role, but arguably the best dialogue in the movie is him with Gaga after Bradley kills himself.
