That is true and I think just about everyone will agree that can't and her dragons will be key to pushing back the others. We are also assuming that jon will be alive after that, he is in for some very trying times ahead

If they completely vanquish all the uglies north of the wall, including and mainly the white walkers, there might not be a need for the watch. But dragon's don't necessarily mean the end of the white walkers... cause they had them in the past as well. Who knows.

ETA: and that is assuming he makes it to the end. Again who knows on that count either.

I think if a Stark is still close to their direwolf, they are "safe."

Robb could be outnumbered against superior troops, and he would cut through them like butter time after time with Grey Wind at his side.

It is only when he kept Wind at a distance that every went wrong for him.

I guess it all depends on how far the mysticism goes in this world. Its been kept more or less "realistic" but the supernatural is becoming a bigger and bigger role.

The question comes down to where did the direwolves and their connection to the Stark kids come from?

Is the three-eyed crow beyond the wall playing as deep a game as Littlefinger, but only his manipulations are through magic?

Too true arya needs to find nymeria im glad bean still has summer but where the hell is rickon?

Also were the targaryens there with dragons the last time the others came I thought it was the children who threw them back the first time.

There were no dragons on Westeros I believe the last time the Long Night hit.

It wasn't long after the Andals came, and Valyria wasn't in the picture yet at ALL.

And it has been suggested strongly that dragons are the absolute bane of the Others. Slightest injury from "dragonglass" being the most effective weapon.

The fact that it is obsidian (which has nothing to do with a dragon) suggests that dragons also have some great effectiveness against them.

Though that might be less a specific mystical reason and more pragmatic: They can fly high and safe above the Others while they lay the entire fricking field ablaze with absurdly hot fires.

The old gods of the North are the only answer I can think of. I'm assuming the children of the forest are still around somewhere too, but the wolves seem more of a divine gift.

Rickon and Shaggydog dog are somewhere beyond the wall, I think?

That Island by Harrenhall (I think) is going to play a huge role with the children of the forest, imho. It may have in AFFC and I just haven't gotten there yet. I am trying to stretch that out until the next book. I might just finish it and reread the first 3.

On an unrelated note, I wonder if the Prologue death sentence trend will continue with dance of dragons.

I wouldn't have thought she would've know anything about dragons, its even lost in the citadel.

Just stumbled across this detail I never caught reading: The maester that thought her was Marwyn...the same one that was in the know about Dany and the dragons and is about to leave to go to her when sam goes to the Citadel.

I personally think that bran is with the children of the forest. He was having green dreams like the children which is what led him beyond the wall. It just seems plausible, I don't think we'll hear anything else about him until he comes back a complete and total badass

I'm curious as to whether Rickon will play a significant part in this story, something has to happen with him.

Was it the chapter with Varymyr Sixskins? It wasn't released really, Martin does readings at all of those nerdfests and someone always transposes and posts it. I'm thinking the trend does continue though. Melisandhe does the deed again maybe?

I think he always states that those chapters are still open to changes, though.

I'm sure you all know this, but the foundation for all of this is a very very loose telling of the war of the roses.

I hope what happens to Bran and Rickon doesn't happen to the "princes in the tower"

I hope he just drew inspiration from that.

Because if it is just a retelling, the Lannisters win.

I know. I like how he is not afraid to kill of characters and all that, but I will be pissed if the Lannisters win.

ETA: until I started to put 2 and 2 together about Jon and Dany, I actually thought that Gendry and Arya would get together and that might become the "Tudors" (an obscure branch of the previous ruling houses... but it doesn't really fit)... but that is looking less likely

I literally have almost zero remembrance of what I learned about the war of the roses in school. I remember hearing about the princes in the tower but not what happened to them.

Care to enlighten or must I search the internets myself

I keep going back to that conversation that Arya overhears.

Who is trying to manlipuate the situation in Westeros for the sake of Dany? Is it for personal gain or is it because they know that "winter is coming?"

Does even that tie into the three eyed crow?

It is a pretty safe assumption that the insider for them is Varys...and I believe him when he says that his main goal at the time was peace within the realm...a realm weak and broken from infighting is one that will be swept aside in the Long Night.

wiki

I just don't want to post it as potential spoilers for anyone
ETA: damn I wish I wasn't in summer school. Between finishing AFFC and a bunch of others, my "to read" pile is growing rapidly without making any progress.
