They did have a phone for a while when the big cable washed ashore.
and they did have a camera for a while when the satellite landed in the lagoon.

Gilligan probably reached the conclusion that he was getting more quality poon on the island that he could ever hope to pull back in civilization . That's why he kept messing up the rescue attempts.
