I literally cannot listen to this band. Pandora hipped me to them and I thought it might be a band I could get into. But I checked them out in detail and was like naw I'll pass.
Had to throw some negativity in the thread. Sorry.

I don't think they are good "album" crafters. I tend to get really bored with most of their stuff. But they just have these really great individual tracks. "Finer Feeling" and "The Underdog" off of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. "The Way We Get By" off of Kill the Moonlight, etc.

The National had a pretty awesome performance of "Afraid of Everyone" last night on Letterman. Sufjan Stevens was with them and provided backup vocals.

Listening to Brothers right now.
The music is just not as edgy as it used to be. The gritty voice is still there but not the ruff guitar lyrics that were used to.
Dan Aurbachs solo album sounds more like the old Black Keys than this. Saw it coming with A&R but didnt expect it to be this laid back and slow/no edge at all.
Its the Keys so it is still 10x better than most of the stuff out today but it's probably their weakest effort imo.
Highlight of the album is "Ten Cent Pistol". That song is just pimp. "Never Gonna Give You Up", "These Days", "Everlasting Light" and "Tighten Up" are pretty solid too.

Grade: The worst Black Keys album is still a solid B

The New Pornographers - Together = A+
The best album from a great group. An immediate classic. I think this album is the reason they got together. It's so good, it's making me re-evaluate the disappointing Challengers album, as you can see that they were working to this. I've owned the album for a week and I've listened to it, no lie, about 30 times. It's great.

So I finally had it on a few spins while travelling. Although I am not a huge fan like yourself, I really like the album as of now. Great sound all the way through, some standout tracks.

I want to marry Neko Case, always enjoyed her work and she really brings the album up a notch. Solid A

My fiancee knows that our impending nuptials are contingent upon Neko Case not falling madly in love with me.

I love their new album. Then again, I've only listened to A&R and Brothers as a whole so my opinion is somewhat irrelevant but "Too Afraid to Love You" is a fantastic song.

And though I'm not a huge huge fan of The New Pornographers, I gave their new stuff a try the other day and I was blown away immediately. Great stuff.

Still trying to get into National's new album. I just can't see it being better than Boxer/Alligator

Also Hold Steady's new album is good.

It almost seems like their is TOO much good music coming out lately. How the hell am I supposed to keep up?

Attack and Release is the worst Black Keys album by a fairly wide margin. Dangermouse simply didn't understand what made the band good. Though Psychotic Girl is an awesome, awesome song.

And you're right, I don't know how anything can be as good as Boxer.

So I guess it seems I've only been listening TBK's consensus weaker material and I still like it alot. Now I must check out their older stuff

Yeah, their early stuff is just brilliant. They put the dirty in dirty blues. I mean, the lack of production values was really a virtue on their early records, as the Keys are well served by a raw sound. Thickfreakness and Rubber Factory are both incredible albums. Probably the best "white boy blues" album since John Mayall's Bean-o album. Yeah, I went there.

High Violet is the National’s third straight masterpiece IMO. No filler and some truly great songs. Hard to say exactly where it ranks in comparison to Boxer or Alligator at this point though since I have listened to the other two so many more times than HV at this point.

Boxer is one of the best of the decade (that would always be a good list to do, but way to large of a project I think). Not sure High Violet is that good.

Jackie Wants a Black Eye is my current favorite. Maybe only one weak song on the whole thing. Such an awesome album. It's their most cohesive release to date, but Easy Beat, We All Belong and Fate are very good albums. "My Old Ways" is stellar.

My Old Ways is still their best song. I still think of them as the art-rock band for people who think Man Man is too wierd. But they really are good.

High Violet debuted at number 3 on the billboard charts. Thought that was pretty cool. Good for the National.

The only thing keeping them from the top were two of my other favorite artists, Justin Bieber and Lady Antebellum.

Yeah, but indie rock is obscure. Think about how many albums these guys are selling without a bit of radio airplay or any marketing push outside of their small genre.

I'm calling it. This is the best year for indie rock since 1991, when Sub Pop exploded. There's just so much good material being released right now.

I've been really into Dr. Dog lately. I really like all the albums you mentioned. Fate could be one of my favorite albums in a long time. The new album...not so much.
