To me it's actually one of those movies that gets funnier than that I like more and more with each watching. Those kinds of movies are rare.

One of the weakest plots in movie history for a movie that works. The driving story is so small and weak it could be a high school film project. For cult films, Holy Grail has more plot and interesting storylines and that looks like it had a budget of 10 grand.
But people love the characters and lazy sitting around dialogue I guess. Least favorite Coens but they pull it off for die hard their fans. Sort of like Life Aquatic for Anderson...only devout die-hards love that weakest offering of his films.

and which one of those is official?
i could understand all the venom if they threw a widely ignored/hated movie on their list like Home Fries or Dr.T and the Women that clearly have no business being debated as a great comedy but Lebowski is hugely popular.

Right, and it's popular because a lot of people think it's awesome and one of the funniest movies of all time. And I don't. Thus, I think it's vastly overrated.
Are you drunk this morning?

The shaggy dog plot is perhaps the best thing about it. Even the resolution is awesome. The climax is almost literally the Dude shrugging his shoulders and forgetting about the whole thing. That's outstanding.
It's a funny movie, but it's probably only my third favorite Coen brothers comedy. Maybe fourth, as its neck and neck with O Brother for me. I far prefer Raising Arizona and Hudsucker Proxy.
You know, for kids.

This simple, almost irrelevant plot is what makes the movie so great imo. The comedy is just lagniappe. The Dude just wanders through life, doing whatever is appropriate at the time, taking her easy. The biggest tragedy he faces is that some chinaman pissed on his rug. In the end that doesn't even matter. "frick it."
It's definitely one of my top movies.
