That's exactly what this movie felt like. It was like Abrams read a fantastic script and thought "WOW, I have to make this!!!"
Then half-way through realized no one would probably watch it so he figured he'd go the Signs route then changed his mind and had the female lead create an iron man like suit and then attached more aliens to the end while instantly transforming the female lead into Sigourney Weaver using Randy Quaid's ID4 alien buster tactic.

This has been my exact argument all along. Cloverfield was never created to be an anthology of different sci-fi films. This was merely a spur the moment decision to bait the audience into seeing it.
By shoehorning a random alien chase into the story, they ruined what might have been a decent stand alone thriller. I read The Cellar script and it should have never been tweaked to fit this realm. The alien nonsense was a complete 180 opposed to the script where the ending involved Goodman chasing her outside of the bunker. It remained a mind-fricking psychological thriller to the very end. You discover Goodman was actually telling the truth and Emmit was the bad guy all along, by turning her against him as they started a relationship and Emmit wanted Howard out of the picture. So he basically convinced her that everything she feared about Howard was true. In the end, Howard really had a daughter (she sees the family pictures in his house) but she was taken away by the state because Emmit lied and testified against him; he really did save her because she reminded him of his daughter; and when she reaches the city, she sees there really was an attack (the city's in ruins as she believed there was no attack).
But quality over cash seems to be against Hollywood beliefs (yet ironically, they're the same people echoing Bernie Sanders'cries about corporate greed). Now it's wasted, but hey, instead of sitting down and wasting time writing a 100 page screenplay and brainstorming ideas for a direct sequel, now all they have to do is pick up a spec script from a no-name with a logline that fits the mold, make a few revisions and shoehorn a different monster into the story and bam... another Cloverfield sequel! That saves so much wasted time! The fans will totally understand!

Just got out of it. I thought it was very intense, and great throughout most the of the movie. The ending was a little rushed I feel like, but none the less it kept me guessing on what was gonna happen next.

So what about the girl from 2 years earlier? Was he a psycho AND right about the aliens?

Yes. He was a total wackjob and just got lucky with the aliens.
His wife took his daughter so he kidnapped a new daughter and hid her in the bunker. She tried to get away so he killed her.

Yeah, that was my thought, as well. Especially when he brought out the acid. And then when he killed Emmitt.

It took the acid AND straight up killing Emmett to finally convince you?

Well the earring and the "Help" kind of gave it away.

Saw it today. Haven't felt that tense in a movie in a long arse time...HOLY shite
Where'd you pick that up at?

That was from the original script (before it was Cloverfied). I liked the original script better than the movie itself.

So (in the original script) if Emmett lied and testified against him...
Why would Howard let Emmett in the cellar?
Just curious.

Wild movie. Anyone else think she might've had combat experience the way she was hurdling through the bunker at the end? Looked like Jet Li. Emmitts death..whoah. And the final ten minutes once she breaks out was a total wtf is going on. Really good movie though.

I agreed with everything you said until:
Why does everything need a god damn sequel? This was a great standalone movie. It doesn't need a prequel/sequel/reboot/spinoff.

It wasn't what I was hoping but it was alright. I think this took place in the same Cloverfield universe but was not really any kind of sequel. We will probably get more of a connection if they do another movie but otherwise it is pretty obvious they took a random script and tried to trick people into thinking this was a Cloverfield sequel. I did go back and forth about what was going on. Was it just a kidnapping, was there really an attack, etc. etc. I just wished the girl had escaped a lot earlier in the movie. I wanted to see what was going on out there and we only saw her outside the bunker for a few minutes and then on the road. I think the radio message at the end is a trick so I have a feeling that will not go well for her if she does head to Houston. I don't see how she could make it all the way there with all the space ships hovering around. She is way too easy to spot at night and during the day driving down the road.

Seems like we will get a series of Cloverfield movies showing different fronts in the alien attack through the eyes of individuals. We saw New York, now Louisiana, probably head to the west coast next. They can piece this together however they want, I just hope it leads to somewhere eventually.

Very good movie. I enjoyed it.
Winstead and Goodman were both terrific

The scene where she sees the crazy woman through the window is actually Emmit in the script . She lets him in, despite Howard's warnings from the other side of the other door. There's a lot of tension and it's obvious Howard doesn't like him, but we of course, stay on the same page as the girl and remain clueless (thinking Emmit's the good guy who ruined whatever plot Howard had in store) until the truth unfolds. I should also note Emmit's name was Nate in the script. He testified against him, lying because he wanted money out of Howard (Nate was a real scumbag).
Nate enters in a Hazmat suit. Howard asks where he got it and Nate claims he recently became a volunteer firefighter and picked it up from the station. Howard asked if Charlie was still the chief and nate says yes. Come to find out, Howard was friends with the chief and his name wasn't Charlie. I believe Nate killed someone and stole it, just after the bombs fell, or at least it's implied.

Two things I'm curious about
So, did he actually kill this girl (not Megan, but the girl he claimed to be his daughter)? The movie makes you assume this. But there really isn't complete clarification.
Is it possible the Emmit was actually the untrustworthy one, since he apparently was in the original script. Seems like a good dude in the movie, but maybe he was telling lies (such as the girl not being Megan).

I gotta tell you, I kind of like where the movie ended up going better than that. That's just my opinion.
