Wheeler suffered some type of an injury to his right middle finger. Girardi said Wheeler suffered the injury when he caught his fingernail on something while putting on his pants sometime Wednesday.

You can take the player away from the Mets, but you can't take the Mets out of the player.

Why do these weird injuries seem to only or mostly happen to MLB dudes?

I think with baseball it's usually pitchers who get a hand/finger injury, when a lot of other sports players can play through those things. So we always hear about the smallest thing becoming an issue.

I like baseball, but it might have the biggest collection of meatheads and dumbasses of any sport. I think they actually hurt themselves doing stupid shite, but make up something innocuous (although strange) to cover for what really happens. Plus, as a whole, they probably aren't in as great of physical shape as football or basketball players.
That, and because they play every day, injuries are more widely reported. A football player might do something dumb to hurt himself on a Tuesday. But by Sunday, he is good to go

I'd rather break my femur than what it sounds like happened to him
