You ever think about how weird quarterbacks are?

With pretty much every other position in football you can look at a picture of an athlete and tell if they're a beast. For example, if you looked at Calvin Johnson you could tell without throwing him a ball that the dude is a freak receiver. Same thing with a Marshawn Lynch or Clay Matthews at their respective positions. But if you saw Tom Brady or Peyton Manning in public they could pass as your run of the mill real estate agent, yet they go out there and put on transcendent performances at the most skilled position on the field. Johnny Manziel could have fit right in with any group of fairy frat boys at A&M and you would never know the kid was the best college football player in the country. Just makes me laugh sometimes thinking about how Aaron Rodgers' goofy looking arse will be in the Hall of Fame one day. And to answer your question, no I am not high right now.

It's more a mindset with quarterbacks I believe. The smartest, dorkiest are sometimes the best at what they do. Much more of a cerebral than physical position.

Well Rodgers isn't that tall but most of these guys are 6'5" or so and they aren't "lanky". Next time you walk through the airport see how many people are that big.

Oh definitely. I don't think Tom Brady is any better at physically throwing a football than say, Jamarcus Russell, but he's an infinitely better QB because he can read a defense and consistently make smart decisions under pressure. It just makes me laugh that football is such a physical, man's sport but the poster boys for the league are guys who look like my coworkers

I think your perception is wrong these guys are much more athletic-'looking' than you think. Peyton, Rodgers, etc. You're just comparing them to guys all over the field who are required to be physical freaks by the nature of their position.
Just like baseball players. They are rarely-gifted athletes, but your perception is off because every other guy on the field is similar.
I once ran into Mike Golic. Always saw him as your run-of-the-mill fat guy. Then I shook his hand in person. I would not frick with that dude. He's a well put together man in person. Shocking really.

quote:This is the correct answer. Years ago, I watched some oddball show where Joe Montana was down in Australia right about the time he retired. They showed him doing all sorts of goofy outback stuff, and then had some videos of him working out with a pro Australian Football team.

Granted, Aussie football is a different game, but those guys are on TV down under, and it's a physical sport. And I never thought of Montana as a big guy. But Joe was the biggest man on the field out there, and he was pushing a few of those guys around in a physical manner while running with them. At the time, I wondered what a guy like Rickey Jackson or some other linebacker would look like.

Shouldn't be. Played 9 NFL seasons on the defensive line. Wrestled in college.

This. There are certainly some physical requirements, but it's basically a brain position.
Tebow would be an exception, since he can lift a house. Cam Newton is anbexception. But most of them don't stand out in a physical sense, other than most of them being considerably taller than the average guy.

And yet, he's two freak plays away from having 6 Super Bowl rings.
