I’m going to get flamed to caca for this, I don’t care, it’s the very sad truth. The Dale Earnhardt of 1979, the one I interviewed that year whose neck was practically fluorescent, before Teresa and Joe Whitlock (who may have played a bigger role than Teresa) cleaned him up, would not get a pit pass or even the slightest consideration for a ride in 2023. Neither would Bobby Isaac or Lee Roy Yarbrough. And David Pearson or the Allisons would have difficulty.

I won’t claim to be more than a seasonal fan. Used to watch a dozen or so races a year but I just don’t watch more than a couple these days. Besides all the car uniformity BS and stages and playoff confusion, I simply don’t have any interest in the drivers anymore. NASCAR has really dropped the ball on marketing drivers to their loyal fan base instead trying to attract a sector that really doesn’t care long term..

I’ve found I prefer the simplicity of F1 - 20 drivers, 10 teams, driver and constructor with the most points at the end of the season win their respective championship.
In NASCAR, there’s 40+ drivers, 20+ owners, just 3 manufacturers, and for some reason there are two sets of standings for the drivers… a playoff and another standing that I guess doesn’t determine the playoff?
It seems like they could streamline the product.

Burning down all the porta johns in the campgrounds deserves honorable mention for debauchery as well.

I heard it was one massive party for Dega and Daytona.
Brickyard was as well.
I think I was drunk for 4 days. Had beer with Cheerios in the morning.

Agree completely. Could add a lot more names to the list that wouldn't get a chance these days. Frankly, Junior, without the last name, likely wouldn't have. He still sounds like a hick.
Tim Richmond on the other hand would have sponsors, and teams, falling over themselves.
Jimmy Johnson is the poster boy for modern marketing driven Nascar.

And where has that marketing led them?

They are playing the long game, not the short game.
This is another sad reality … if you’re over 49 years old, there is no sports entity, not NASCAR, not the NFL, not MLB, not even the NCAA, that cares about you as a fan. In fact there is no sports entity that even WANTS you as a fan, the attitude is if they cater to you, they’ll die with you.
Again, the long game.

Following up, my personal opinion is that long game is not going to be successful for NASCAR because aside from sports car racing, the fan base for auto racing of all types in the US has always been everyman/working class more than the elites. That’s the important thing, transcending political and regional and demographic concerns. The problem now is the competitor base is all elites, a lot of folks with rich daddies who have funded their kid’s play toy since they were kindergartners in some cases. And it’s created a beast that they don’t think everyman/working class fans can adequately feed.

I slowly stopped watching once Dale died. Its not even the same sport now IMO

I’m with you. I’ve been to 20+ races at six or so tracks. And I never missed a race on tv except for a road course race or Pocono. But I was not a fan of the points change and when Gordon retired I pretty much lost all interest in it.
I figured I would still be interested in watching Daytona, Dega, Bristol, Darlington, the Coke 600, etc. but I haven’t watched any of em in years now.

I went to 'Dega for about 10yrs in the 90s. Stayed in the family campground when it was "park where you want" through the move to allocated spots. It was essentiallly a guys weekend from Thursday to Monday
Sat up in OV Hill towers
Every year there would be at least one burned out hulk of an RV and reports of CO poisoning from heaters in tents.
Used to cruise what was then called the "animal section" where literally anything went...
The last few years we went, there were more cops in the campgrounds, clamped down on cruising, restrictions on gray water, and it all cost more each year.
Finally quit going as the group lost interest...
Good times while they lasted.
And now like many others, don't pay attention hardly at all.
ETA - i remember when they had to add backstretch seats... now long gone.

When you go from broadcasting every race on major networks, to second rate networks on cable only you are fricking yourself.

I never watched NASCAR, but it was clear as an outside observer, that the heyday of the late 90s was the sport's zenith. Instead of doubling down and embracing their core fanbase, NASCAR thought it could be something it really could not: a nationwide sport that appealed to a variety of demographics.
It just didn't fit. You have a cote fanbase that feels alienated, and a targeted fanbase that DGAF. Shame, that.

I grew up about 20 minutes away and we used to go to the campgrounds and ride through at night. It was a mini Mardi Gras with the flashing and bead tossing and drinking.
Several years ago, they started locking the gates to the campgrounds at 9pm so nobody in or out. Not long after that, the backstretch grandstand was torn down because attendance had dropped so much. It's a shame you can't go experience that craziness anymore.

I always have felt like RJ Reynolds being replaced by Nextel as Cup sponsor after the '03 season was when things began to turn. That was when the Chase was first implemented and seemed to be when there began to be much more emphasis on drivers being clean-cut and sponsor friendly (e.g. Jimmie Johnson). IMO it started to become much less organic and more corporate/sterile. It seems like NASCAR has made some attempts to get back to that in recent years, but it seems they have lost too much of that core fanbase and they don't seem to be coming back.

A big part of me died with Davey Allison.
As far as dega’ goes, can’t be better now than then.
Noosecar turned to crap when they kicked Winston to the curb.

Bunch of purists in here. I just like watching the cars turn left.

NASCAR went woke and tried to force Bubba Wallace and his fake noose story down our throats. The only time I ever hear about them now is when they do things like that. I couldn’t name but a handful of drivers now.

That was only a few months ago. You obviously go way back with your fandom.
