Sepp Blatter announced that FIFA has spoken with 3 countries that will be back up sites if SA can't pull it off in time, anyone have any ideas who they are?

It came out last week or so that the U.S. is the main target for a backup country.

Yeah, expect it to be the US.

I have nothing against South Africa as a country, or Africa as a continent, but I am hoping they will frick up so we can get the World Cup. That would be awesome. I was too young to enjoy the 94 cup.

Anyone think New Orleans or Baton Rouge could be a host city if this happens? Let them play it right there in the Dome, Tiger Stadium or Tad Gormley. It would be

good chance for houston though we get lots of big time games at RS

So, all we need is for an African government to be inefficeint and fail at its task? Cool. I'll buy tickets now for the World Cup in the USA.
And Louisiana would have no shot of hosting, as it would stick almost exclusively to MLS cities.

I think the sites which would be shoo ins are: Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, DC, New York, and Boston. All have supported soccer and all of have large venues. I'd love to see Columbus get to host if we got the Cup because of their soccer-only facility. But its not likely.
That's a big if, though. I think FIFA is going to give South Africa EVERY chance to host. If it moves to the US, it will certianly be very last minute, probably less than a year out.

It would be sweet. Crew Stadium's a great facility. But it's WAY too small (around 25,000 capacity, I'm guessing a W.C. stadium would have to hold at least 50,000). The parking is limited, and bad, it's grassy and muddy (they say they're going to make it into a real lot, but they never have), and it's about 5 minutes on the interstate from downtown Columbus, so there's no restaurants and nothing to do within walking distance of the area (other than the Ohio Fairgrounds, which only holds the State Fair in August, and the Ohio Historical Society). It's not in the best area of town, either. I'd love it to be held at Crew Stadium, but realistically, it's just not going to happen.
I doubt Ohio Stadium would be an option, either. Too big. Maybe they can give some games to local NFL sites (Colts, Lions, Bengals, Browns, or Steelers). That'd be nice.

Unfortunately, the only possibility would be the Superdome. The one huge complaint about the '94 World Cup was the heat in the US. I don't expect Florida to host any games, either, if we do get the WC.

how fricking fricked would south africa be if this happened? hundreds of millions of dollars spent for literally nothing

Do they ever play high-level soccer on turf like that?

Yes they do. But it won't happen either way. NY, MA, DC, LA, and Chicago = host cities.

Well they could always host the Commonwealth Cup and a couple Rugby Tourneys
Seriously though, this would be a huge slap in the face to African development and Mbecki's ANC government's ability to get things accomplished.
Interesting note- the 94 host sites were: Detroit (Pontiac Dome) Palo Alto (Stanford Stadium) LA (Rose Bowl) Boston (Foxboro) Chicago (Soldier Field) Dallas (Cotton Bowl) DC (RFK) Orlando (Citrus Bowl) NY (Meadowlands)..
Thats 9 cities for a 24 team field. 06 had 32 teams and Germany had 12 venues in 12 cities

I hope SA screws up just for the fact that the games will come on at reasonable hours. 2002 sucked because the games were on early in the morning and 06 sucked because they were on in the middle of the day.
