- Under the new CBA, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania, the salary cap will start at $7 million (up from $1.5 million in 2025) with the supermax starting at $1.4 million (was $249,244 in 2025).

-The average salary will be around $600,000 ($120,000 in 2025), with the minimum salary surpassing $300,000 ($66,079 in 2025), sources said.

Average revenue share of nearly 20% across deal

This is some Hollywood/Amazon/Fortune 500 type math right here. The WNBA has literally never made money. They lost $40 million last year and it was their best year ever. Also, Holy shite the minimum was 72k now its 300k?

There are 15 teams this season. $7 million salary cap. Thats $105 million total for the league. The new TV deal nets them $200 million per year. All record numbers for the "W". They ended up getting not quite 20% of revenue share. Internal numbers said 22.5% of revenue share would be the break even for the league. The players wanted 31%, that would have resulted in a $700 million loss for the league; they only generate $200 million in revenue before the new tv contract kicks in. Total revenue in 26 is expected to be $400 million.

By comparison, the Golden State Warriors generated $250 million in ticket sales alone last season. The league itself generated $2.5 billion in "gameday revenue" (tickets, concessions, parking, etc) during the 23-24 season.

If the NBA "eats" all WNBA revenue, even the effing TV contract, you're talking about it hitting their bottom line, just for NBA TV revenue, to the tune of 5.7%. A very easy tax write off on the books. But, in reality, the NBA forced the tv folks to up the ante on the WNBA contract. It all ends up in their pockets. Some "W" owners even triple dip (investor, W owner, Nba Owner)the revenue before the players get paid.

Tl;dr The WNBA generates $400 million in revenue starting this year, the NBA generates somewhere around $13 billion in revenue, literally eating all aspects of the WNBA costs the NBA 1.5% of their revenue which is bullshite anyway because of the triple dipping involved. The Nobel laureate leading the charge for the WNBA negotiations somehow netted them 2% less than break even for the league, as well.

What leverage did they have to negotiate in the first place?

I guess they could threaten to quit, but then what would Robin Roberts have to get excited about on Good Morning America?

NBA owners wanted to keep their tax write-offs.
