Will we ever see the Split Back under center formation come back?

This was the base NFL formation when a lot of us were growing up. It is almost extinct now. More shotgun and spread concepts have created a more wide open game and more explosive plays, leaving the old “pro” formation behind. Will we ever see it come back?

Some high schools would run veer option out of split back, but I’m more referring to the true Bill Walsh 80’s West Coast split back. With the do-it-all Fullback, the pass catching TE, and the short precise passing game. It was fun to watch when run properly.

We will see it with Kamara/Ingram at some point. Or Taysom/Kamara, or Ingram/Taysom, or Zach Line/Taysom, or Line/Kamara, or Line/Ingram....................Boston Scott
ETA: In HS that was a formation we ran out a lot, that and I formation. I was a fullback. Seems it could still be used with one staying into pass block and other going out for a pass or whatever

Honestly I’ve completely forgotten that formation use to be popular. It does bring back some memories of more old school football. Again, not sure what the negatives are with it, as in using it every now and then.

Teams still use it and its concepts they just do it out of the shotgun split

Nothing is wrong with a change of pace and putting different things on film.
But spreading the field helps put athletes in space. If you're going to put multiple athletes on the field, it's best to consistently spread them out and make the defense cover the whole field.
And being in shotgun is obviously beneficial for pre-snap reads and requires less of a drop back help post snap.

That’s what’s interesting to me... are OC’s getting smarter, or are they just improving their craft through trial and error? Are they simply responding to what defenses are doing?
Because if you’d asked Bill Walsh in 1985, “hey man why don’t you just put Montana in the gun with 3-4 WR’s 90% of the time?” he’d probably have had a good answer. Maybe the skill sets of the players back then were better suited to that type of offense, as opposed to what a wide open 2018 NFL offense looks like.
If you believe the “everything is cyclical” mantra then we’ll see it come back in style eventually.

The league has changed the rules making passing easier/earning more yards per play than the run.
Going under center is becoming much less uncommon with only 37% of the snaps from there.
Many things are cyclical, but the rules within those spaces typically don't change.

I see what you are saying but many teams, for instance the Saints, fun the I formation. That isn’t any more spread out than the pro set. Maybe DEs and LBs are just so much quicker off the edges now and made the RBs split out much more irrelevant?

The I formation is a good running formation because you can run either direction to any gap equally well.
That's not true for split backs.
Also, how often does New Orleans run a 2 back I?

True on the running either direction, I was thinking more of it as a pass situation, like play action. Saints use Line quite a bit though it seems. I don’t know the percentages overall on how much they are in the I. Maybe 8-10 times a game? I know they run play action with it some also. The split formation does seem kinda awkward though compared to today’s football.

It doesn't do anything great. That's it's major drawback.
I personally think that pistol is the best formation on paper out there. Gives you the advantages of the shotgun and the single back I simultaneously.

We had a split back under center formation sighting yesterday. Probably the first time LSU has lined up like this since the early 90s.
