As hurt as he was... Doug Williams would have dove for the fumble that Cam was scared of doing... PURE FACT...........

Elway took THREE offenses to the SB basically by himself
FIFY Peej, Denver's defense with Mecklenburg, Dennis Smith, Atwater, Rulon Jones, Mark Haynes, Simon Fletcher etc were statistically among the best defensive units in the sport each those years they advanced to the Super Bowl then FACT

Warren Moon and it isn’t even close.

I would still have Warren Moon and possibly Randall Cunningham ahead of Newton but in five years of the same production Newton probably moves to #1
I’d still have Moon #1.
Cam may end up with better numbers but Moon did it in an eye when teams were actually allowed to play defense

His SB teams were:
1st, 7th and 15th in total scoring defense during the regular season.
His 15th ranked defense was actually the closest Super Bowl for Elway.
But you can look at stats all day long. The reason the Broncos had good scoring defenses statistically is that is how Dan Reeves coached.
He shortened the game, played to keep it close, ran the ball, the clock and then told John to win it in the 4th.
Elway wanted to be traded out of Denver all those Super Bowl years, he felt he was being hampered and not being allowed to live up to his potential.
The Broncos having great defenses during his SB years is a mirage.
If you don't understand the context, the time, the coach and watched the games. Looking at stats after the fact does not the story tell.
The defense gave up 39 to the Giants (a record at the time I believe); 42 to the Redskins (a new record I believe) and 55 to S.F. (a new record I believe.)
The only thing the Broncos D did during Elway's Super Bowl years was setting new records in the Super Bowl for points given.
But some awesome defense.

They did it again in 2013, too.

I am a man that was lucky enough to watch The Broncos in 1986, 1987 and 1989... Elway was unreal getting these teams to the SB... YES the AFC was not as strong as the NFC in those years, BUT just getting to A SB with such little talent around him was amazing IMO... Elway FOUND A way to win with so little back then it was amazing... Did he get his arse whipped in the 1st three SB'S?? Sure... But name me a QB that could have gotten those same teams to the SB..................

I like Moon and agree he's #1 for now, but he was a system QB (run-n-shoot) which allowed him to put up big numbers while eliminating the physicality defenses were allowed to use back then. He had four (really good) wideouts split out, running adjustable routes and it was bing, bang, move the sticks, and the defenses were stuck on a swivel.
And of course Moon couldn't run, or improvise really. He was a pure pocket gunslinger.
I've always said R. Cunningham was the closest match to Cam - same size, athleticism, pocket work, throwing mechanics & fluid delivery, etc.

Wasn't Moon pretty damn good in Minnesota too?

No they don't... Elway took THREE teams to the SB basically by himself... Cam does NOT have the talent to do that.............
Cam led a team with a receiving corps of Greg Olsen, Ted Ginn, Jerrico Cotchery, Devin Funchess, and Corey Brown to a 15-1 record and the Super Bowl. Also, Elway went to those three Super Bowls because he played in the worst conference in the history of American sports, the late '80s American Football Conference.

In 1987 Denver's so-called great defense gave up 33 points in the AFC Championship game to the Browns. (back when that mean't something.)
Only the 1984 Steelers allowed more points in the then 17 year history of the AFC Championship game.
They then gave up 42 to the Skins in the SB.
This myth of Denver's great D's is just that...a total a myth.

quote:Except for 2015. That was one of the GOAT defenses. Definitely top 5 in NFL history, and what they did is even more impressive than others because they played during a time where offenses ruled the league.
