no way in my mind you can combine players involved with team sports and players in individual sports in same category.

Oh for shite's sake. Take this to the other 400 threads on this board to post this shite.

Come on dude, Jordan is undisputed as the GOAT and probably will never be challenged. The point I'm making is that no one will ever have that level of competitive fire, no matter how physically talented they may be, which is why Jordan will forever and always be the GOAT.

AS far as transcending sports, I'd say before Tigergate, Tiger Woods would've probably been the closest to that level. But barring a ridiculous comeback and regardless of if he breaks Jacks record, he'll never be as money as he once was on Sunday.

while i see where you are going, you have to realize that the 3 listed are on there also because they are transcendent athletes. they are bigger than their sport.

Gretzky should be in this conversation. If you look at the numbers he put up compared to other great hockey players it is insane

I'd agree with that, but in the OP's defense, he did name three different guys.

If we're talking about one guy that transcends sports, Jordan is my guy.

i knew somebody would say jim thorpe, but lets be honest. if you show 100 people a photograph of jordan, ali or ruth, 99 will be able to identify them. i doubt even 50% of the people on this board could identify jim thorpe.

To be fair, your original post didn't say anything about being recognizable or transcendent.

If you throw those terms in, then Thorpe is out.

i think it's pretty safe to say that jodan, ali and ruth are the 3 greatest. most high profile sports journalists agree. now, will anyone ever supplant one of these......it will be difficult. tiger has the only legitimate chance right now.

I would not consider Ali in my three greatest American athletes of all-time, but these are your three biggest athletes of all-time.

Their impact on and off the court/field/ring is unmatched. They are transcendent figures in culture and sport. Babe Ruth was the first true superstar. Ali is a worldwide figure. Jordan and his brand revolutionized the worshiping of sports heroes. These are clearly the big three in terms of the most important athletes of all-time.

Screw the medals. Owens was the man. The man wasn't even a citizen in his own country, and he goes to Berlin and makes Hitler look like a total fool.
