Without a split champion or championship game? Penn State beat Ohio State by 7 touchdowns and dropped from #1 somehow the next week.

Dr Tom was great at politics, so maybe threatening to retire every year so maybe they felt bad for him. Would have been a great game, both offenses were unstoppable.

Surprised PSU doesnt claim this anyway.

This doesn’t answer your question, but I’m pretty sure that was the year that started the BCS ball rolling.

Favoritism. Just like the rules always change to benefit Bama.

The Bowl Coalition started in 1992.

And the Big 10 and PAC 12 did not join the Bowl Coalition because they felt the Rose Bowl was more important. They changed their mind quickly after Penn St got nothing for their undefeated season.

Bc at the time it was perceived that PSU had a weaker schedule. Nebraskas win over Miami was held in high regard give Nebraska’s historical issues with speed teams.

And also people wanted Tom Osborne to win one.

BCS would’ve been perfect that year.

It's not like the polls agree to split it out of fairness.

Both polls voted and they both voted Nebraska #1.
