Of course, you could put on a basketball game on a football field without elevating the court. But raising the court off the ground improves sight lines. Players on the benches and members of the media sitting at the scorer’s table could get in the way of some people’s views, and having everyone below the court makes it easier for others to see.

I’m still not understanding. Why aren’t all basketball courts raised?

Because NBA arenas are already designed for the stands to end at the court's baseline creating ideal sightlines.

Why can’t they just recreate that with the stands that they bring in?

Long time lurker here. Wild how often when I’m reading a thread and seeing a poster act like they have no grasp of reality I’ll eventually notice the username and it’s tacky sweater.

2004 final four at the Alamodome was played on a ground level floor. Temporary stands (massive) were placed that basically divided the dome in half. Court was on one half, and a massive media area with tables on the other half. Seating on all sides was pretty close to the floor with end line seats being furthest away to allow for a big media, cheerleader, band area at each end.

It looks like they’ve raised the floor and now use the whole dome for game seating.

Common when the venue isn't specifically built for basketball.

Anybody here ever seen a basketball game in one of these stadiums? I’m curious about what it’s like in person.

In the case of the Final Four, the reason for the elevated court, which sits 27 inches off the floor, is both aesthetic and financial. There's an obvious challenge to staging a basketball game, with its 4,700 square feet of court, on a space designed for a football field, with its 45,000 square feet.

Then perhaps they should play basketball in basketball arenas...
