Indy used to be somewhat popular nationally (I think.)

I remember staying up late in the early 80's to watch Rick Mears win it because it seemed like a big deal. That was in 2nd grade.

I've watched two other Indy races since then.

Put it this way from about 1968 to the SPLIT The INDY 500 was AMERICAS race. It has changed since then, And Indy car racing has NEVER recovered. BIG track racing is what is keeping NASCAR relevant to any NEW fans that come along. You will always have your diehard fans in both sports.Daytona is now Americas race.

and it sure won't help if the 48 wing the title again this year.

Not even an issue - his wreck at Charlotte on Sunday essentially knocked him out of title contention.

NASCAR more popular than Indy, because NASCAR drivers were through with go-carts at age 4

nascar looks more like what me and you drive... also not trying to be insensitive but nascar crashes don't shatter the car into a thousand fragile pieces

daytona and indy though are equally exciting

Indycar has never recovered from the CART/IRL split. Once upon a time, they were the premier racing league in this country.

NASCAR has been very successful marketing their product over the past 15-20 years.

Right now, i'd say Indycar is kind of caught between the NASCAR crowd and the F1 crowd, and with F1 returning to the US next year, it's going to be more challenging for IndyCar to increase popularity.

I remember this too...Rick Mears was the only Indy driver I ever really liked and I don't remember why I liked him though...But I still buy Penzoil products to this day because of him.

Yeah, I'm a sucker

The IRL/CART Split the late 90's really hurt big time Open Wheel racing.

Also at the time NASCAR was putting out a great product with great racing at all sorts of tracks.

Now NASCAR is simply on top because they have their shite together so to speak promotion-wise and financially and that Indy Racing is still suffering from bouts of ineptitude.

I grew up being a racing fan period but NASCAR/Stock cars in general was my favorite form. However NASCAR has gotten far away from what attracted me to it as a child.

Hardly any more short track races, lots of single file, boring racing with no action/no passing, and the drivers have to act like robots lest the almighty Mike Helton fine them.

A local dirt track or local asphalt track stock car race will put on a better show these days than NASCAR.

When it comes to real open wheel racing for me, sprint car racing is where it is at. Real open wheel racing takes place on dirt. If you ever want to see a great show put on, go to a World of Outlaws race. 1000 lb cars with 900 horsepower racing on a little bullring tracks. Lots of action.

You're numbers are a little off (I think its 1350 lbs minimum weight with driver now the HP is around 800-850 I think), but I agree. OR late models put on a great show too. But either way, dirt is the way to go

If I watch racing, which I rarely do, I like Indy car. It isn't necessarily because I don't like NASCAR, I just like Indy car more.

I drag race occasionally but that is boring as hell to watch on TV.

NASCAR needs Jr to come back to winning races badly.
so, how would he do this? He is suppose to have the best equipment available and his crew is one of the highest paid - could it be he lacks talent?

IMO, answer is two simple words:

Ricky Bobby

This. Racing is not near as exciting as it was with the old cars. It's the main reason why I don't watch Nascar anymore.

I don't really care one way or the other about the CoT, but if its much safer I'm all for it. I think the ridiculous wing on the first iteration and the splitter turned a lot of people off, but those are gone now.

A NASCAR car hasn't looked like the make & model they're supposed to replicate in what...20 years?

The real problems with NASCAR are as follows:
1) They race all these shitty boring cookie cutter tracks - 1.5 miles of no passing. Meanwhile tracks like Darlington only have one date, and old staples like Rockingham are no longer on the schedule.
2) The drivers are in large part pussies more concerned about their corporate image than whooping somebody's arse when they get mad
3) Mike Helton plays a big part into #2
4) NASCAR sold its soul for corporate money and now they're coming back to earth and the people who built them up are alienated.
5) There is a lack of personalities in NASCAR. Nobody comes across as a bad arse who will whoop somebody's arse in the pits after the race for putting them in the wall. It's a bunch of whiny douche bags or a bunch of fake looking pretty boys.
