Why is “Big Shot” such an underrated 30 for 30? A fraudster tried to buy an NHL team

He had grossly misrepresented his net worth: he was worth only $5 million.
His Bison Group had 22 employees and assets of $3 million.
He had lied about numerous items on his résumé. For instance, he had claimed to have graduated from an exclusive prep school in Ohio, but had actually graduated from a small Catholic school in suburban Cleveland.
His "inherited wealth" did not exist; neither of his grandfathers had an estate valued at more than $246,000.

I suppose because many people aren’t interested in it because it’s a hockey story. It would have blown up if it was in one of the other 3 major sports.

The story of him eating out with some exec or someone like that and getting the expensive bill afterwards and just staring at the exec until he picks up the check and pays for it cracks me up every time

Steinbrenner and a group bought the Yankees for $8 mil in 1972.
That's still only $46 mil today with inflation.
That's still only a quarter of the Yankees payroll last season.
Clippers were bought for nothing back in the day.
People think they can get lucky.
Shite I think the owner of the Kings paid nothing, still owes Gretzky millions of dollars.

Kings were bought for basically 200 million in 2020 dollars and are now worth 850

It's an interesting story but I never found it to be worthy of a 30 for 30.

Thanks for bringing this up

Watched it about a week ago and loved it
Can’t believe it’s not more widely known

Didn't Jones buy the Cowboys fairly cheap too when they were so bad?

This is a sneaky one. I initially bypassed it, because it was hockey. Got around to it, fricking fascinating. Dude scammed everyone

Best part is that he got $80 million loaned to him and was only $17mil from getting it done.

It was $140 million in 1989, which was pretty substantial back then.

Because it’s hockey and of all teams the Islanders
Maybe would have moved the needle more if a more valuable team

I thought it was a lot cheaper. Never mind then.
