Why don’t they just get rid of preseason games in the NfL?

They want to add another game and rumors are the players will opt for getting rid of all preseason games, if they go down that path.

Would anyone be upset if they got rid of preseason games? Besides the money aspect, there’s really no reason to have these games.

Yes, there is. They need to pick out the 53 best players for the team

Uh I would imagine the 40+ guys who are fighting for a roster spot would be pretty upset.

they get more work done in joint practices with other teams
I would eliminate them altogether especially if Goodell wants a game 18
more regular season games risk injury for top players heading into playoffs so I don't really understand an extra game - would be better off adding teams to playoffs then another regular season game
they can figure it out and get ready for first game without preseason games, college does it

Teams should be able to get this done without preseason games. No reason why they can’t.

Sorry. Do better during practice and make a name for yourself instead waiting for a quarters worth of playing time in preseason game 3 against the other teams scrubs.

Preseason games don’t matter but that’s okay because regular season and playoff’s don’t matter either. It’s all meaningless fun and games

I think coaches and players would strongly disagree. They need more practice / preseason time and I think we see the downward effect of eliminating those things when it feels like every Oline and team is a disaster in the first month because it’s basically like its own preseason

Now it shouldn’t be treated or charged as part of a season package, but I think there’s a lot of valuable benefit to that.

First half of the season would be a slop fest

Almost half the league makes the playoffs as it is now. The new format is already going to produce 9-8 playoff teams on a regular basis. Do we really need to add more teams so that wild card spots are going to teams with losing records?

ETA: they should go back to a 16 game schedule and add an extra bye week to push the Super Bowl to Presidents Day weekend. Then sell the TV networks on there being 18 weeks of regular season football and you'll just have fewer regional market only games with teams having an extra bye week. TV networks still get 18 weeks of regular season national broadcasts which is where the biggest money is at.

It’s about money. Owners charge for these games as part of season-ticket packages.

Preseason games aren't actually fun though

They’ll have to show crappier games if you spread the schedule out to another week

4 games is stupid. 2 to 3 max. If you can't make the team or figure out who you need to keep on the roster in 2-3 games and practices than too bad.

And yet we find out every single fricking year with every team that some players play different in games than they do in practice.

This ain’t Madden hoss.

They are if you have more than a fleeting interest in football.

It’s fun to watch players fight for roster spots. It’s like each team has their playoffs before roster cuts.

I have plenty interest in football. Preseason games are a slog.
