Why doesn't Southeastern compete at the FBS level in football?

It's the third largest university in Louisiana. Did the 17 years of no program kill the fan base? Strawberry Stadium only seats 7,000.

First off, I think we have too many schools in Louisiana compete at the FBS level.

There's a fanbase here and many because of the 17 year absence are fans of other schools. The other thing is that kids around here want to play for LSU and then you have Saban showing up at Ponchatoula High because the principal there is a Bama alum. Remember the kid who caught the game winning TD in the 2018 NC game, DeVonta Smith? He went to Amite, only 15 miles from SLU's campus.

Maybe one day when they see some success in the Southland but they had maybe one good season in recent memory. They'd get murdered if they played FBS opponents all the time.

Only one other college in the state actually competes at that level now.

As a Demon fan I'm happy NSU competes at the FCS level. For SLU I think the reasons I like being FCS may be the same.

1. Regional Conference - Good close rivals with McNeese, SLU, Nicholls, SFA

2. Chance to compete for a National Title - For me I prefer to watch the Demons compete for a national title as opposed to a minor bowl game.

3. $$$ - Financially NSU (and SLU) simply can't compete with the majority of FBS schools. Makes more sense to play against FCS teams.

Exactly, SLU made the quarter finals in 2013. Had they played in FBS, there is no way in hell would they ever come close. Especially competing for recruits with the likes of bigger and better funded schools in the immediate area.

It's the proximity to LSU that kills them. People want to go to and watch LSU games.

Louisiana Tech does fine and they have less students than Southeastern. They have a lot of distance between themselves and LSU.

Absolutely. Last year there were groups in the area not just selling tickets but also catching charter buses on campus for people to go to the SLU@LSU game. That's the only time I've heard of anyone ever doing that. Not even for baseball games when SLU and LSU play each other at the Box.

Although it's been a while since I've gone to a game at Strawberry Stadium myself, I'll have to make it out there sometime this season.

Are you that out of touch? Anyone saban speaks with has no shot of wanting to go to SLU, with all due respect

That wasn't my point.

My point is that kids around here don't want to play for SLU regardless of where they're at on talent. Even if they don't have a shot at a P5 school or lesser FCS conference, SLU isn't their first, second, or even third choice. Hell, there are FBS schools they can go to that have more prestige.

Why would they want to? They would end up playing in a conference like the Sun Belt or Conference USA with no shot at ever playing for a championship. At least in FCS they can compete for a title.

I'm sure if SLU or anybody thought it would work they would be FBS

Is that a real question?

Go down the list of teams and mark a line through the teams that collect a large paycheck to get their head beat in.

I think the reason is that Southeastern is a commuter school and doesn’t get a lot of support in athletics. They only support they really get are from Greeks and they only make up a small percentage of the student body.

They have found a nice niche doing exactly what they are doing academically and athletics.

I don't know any early Southeastern football history, but my dad was looking at the roster and said there are far fewer local kids than in the old days. Was wondering where they all go. Obviously, they're not all going to LSU or Bama, but w/ 130 FBS teams now, they have a lot of choices.

Maybe the local kids aren't as good as they used to be

Not the commuter school it once was. Plenty of places to live on campus and nearby. Downtown Hammond is actually a cool place now. Wasn’t this way 20 years ago.
