Power relative to what? Any college can go independent. ND just so happens to have enough support to be self sustaining. Only a handful of colleges could do so.

They draw TV ratings, which equals money. If their football program ever lands in a conference on a full-time basis, that conference’s network partners will pay that conference more money.

Because of the teams that are not already in conferences that they want to be in they are probably the ones that will add the most money
They arent Ohio State or Alabama big but those teams arent options

They are by far the largest remaining "free agent" team in the ongoing conference realignments. No one else adds near the value they do

Because they have a lot of rich alumni. Plus a large fan base in Boston that wants to root for an Irish Catholic institution and doesn't realize there's one of those locally.

In numbers that resonate with TV executives, Notre Dame ranks eighth in the number of non-bowl/playoff games watched in recent seasons by at least three million people, per Sports Media Watch. The Irish had a total of 16 games with three million or more viewers in 2018, ’19 and ’21.
And they lost at least 2 games each season...so it wasn't like people were tuning in to watch a juggernaught.
People hate to hear it on this board but Notre Dame draws, draws, draws...eyeballs.
They're THE national brand.

They by far and away have the largest national fan base in the country. Most every city across the US with at least 350,000 people have a dedicated Notre Dame bar to watch games.

Yep. They're exactly like the Dallas Cowboys. Haven't won a championship or even gotten really close in a long time, yet people tune in to watch them.

Notre Dame was a juggernaught in the 60's and 70's...kicked the shite out of Alabama every time they played them.
Was a juggernaught in the late 80's early 90's.
And as we all know did recently play for the National Title and Alabama finally got their revenge.

I'm not an Irish fan, but they are a big deal.

That's why Notre Dame is so coveted by the Big10 of course.
If they snag Notre Dame...shite, they have 4 of the TOP 5 fanbases in the country.

Because the ACC desperately needs them.
SEC is about to have 7 of the top 10 most valuable programs.
