Why does it seem like there are way more scrums in football now?

At both college and pro, it seems like there are just way more plays (and TDs) that involve what appears to be halted forward progress, and then the entire OL piles in and pushes everything forward. The Bush Push has been legal for years in both college and pro (right?). What gives.

I think the increasing focus on player safety results in more stalemate tackles that would’ve previously ended in bodyslams, guys going low on the stood-up ballcarrier, or headhunters laying the wood, etc.

If you ask my old man, they don't call assisting the runner anymore.

Because it’s legal now. The “Bush push” was not legal at that time.

Because they work… every time you need a yard you can get it. I don’t think Chalmette was stopped once in those situations when we piled forward like that

Covid. Ever since the ridiculous shutdowns and mandates, people have had excess energy/frustration to let out.

Scrum pushes usually aren’t assisting as it’s often the OL mashing on defenders trying to wrap up the ball carrier

They need to bring back the flying wedge. Let the game come full circle
