I feel like I'm on crazy pills right now.
How is this even a topic? The better question, as someone already pointed out, why would a team not have names on the back.

I went to a high school game this season in Ascension Parish and it was the damnedest thing...EVERY single player on one team had a last name of St. Amant...

McNeese puts "McNeese" or "Cowboys" depending on home and away, and it drives me insane. I get the point, but it aggravates me.

I keep a gameday program of each game being played on my coffee table, to match player number to player. Doesn't everyone?
MLB doesn't require it, either does the NCAA and when the NFL started requiring it, the NFL wasn't the TV sport it is today. This was well before the free agency explosion and many NFL fans could name most of the starters for their favorite team. I know how they can be used in todays game while watching on TV, but that doesn't really answer why the NFL started requiring it 30-40 years ago.
Maybe it was because that was when the game started to grow on TV. It isn't that I don't like it, just curious as to why.

I think part of it has to do with players wearing the same number, and sometimes changing numbers. Smaller programs usually reuse jerseys?
Also it a player feels good to be identified by their last name.
It isn't an issue in baseball because there are less players, and they don't wear face masks.

The NCAA doesn't require that the names are on the back of the jersey, only the NFL and in the NFL two players cannot have the same number on the same team.
In no way does the question, "why not?" answer why they are required in the first place. I have no desire or need to provide justification on why they should be removed, because I don't think they should.
The only thing I can come up with as to why the NFL started mandating them in 1970 is because that was the year of the merger which also brought a new TV contract. Prior to the merger in 1970, the NFL did not have the names on the back, only the AFL.
Hockey requires names, but MLB doesn't, so the facemask argument is kinda a moot point.
Anyway, I wasn't sure if anyone had any insight as to "why" the AFL teams started doing it and as to why it was made mandatory in 1970.
