Why do the Spurs have 5 centers on the roster?

Wemby
Kornet
Plumlee
Olynyk
Biyombo

The last 3 don't get any playing time unless it's a blowout. The last 3 were also once starters on teams within the last 4 years. Just seems like a waste of money where they could have got depth at other positions.

They are one of the deepest teams in the league. Also, Wemby is injury prone and they minimize his minutes quite a bit, so they need people there.

When you get to the playoffs, most teams only really play 8, maybe 9 guys unless it's a blowout. So, it doesn't really matter who's sitting at the end of the bench.

They have Wemby and kornet.

The other 3 are veteran presence / don’t get any playing time and suck. Kelly isn’t even really a center he should be a PF but the game has evolved so much you’re probably right to call him that. But he should not be one.

They are probably making less than an OT baller between the 3 of them. They couldn’t have used that money to get anything useful. But they shouldn’t have kept so many vet presence spots when the 10 man rotation is thin (to be fair it didn’t look thin until the playoffs started).

I’m sure they thought at least one would make an OK 3rd center if Wemby or kornet went down. But they were wrong about that.

Biyombo is apparently the only useful one veteran presence wise so I’m fairly certain he will stick around. The other 2 might never make an nba roster again

Olynyk was acquired as an expiring contract/trade piece and they ended up holding onto him.

Plumlee was an insurance policy since they were really short on big man depth when Wemby got shut down last year

Kornet was a FA signing to backup and spot start for Wemby

Biyambo is basically Wemby’s mentor

Plumlee is the only slightly bizarre fit since they probably could have used that spot on another shooter.

The other factor is that Wemby isn’t a real center, he is tall but the spurs need real centers (big and strong) to take the big hits that centers take under the basket. Wemby will not have a long and productive career if he is the one who has to do this. So the lots of centers thing actually makes sense. But they need to spend real money and not a bunch of guys who should be playing in Europe at this point.

Im the biggest duke / spurs Stan you will find and I was thrilled when they got plumlee (completely out of the blue) but at this point he just needs to ride off into the sunset. If the spurs really like him they can gift him a home on the far northside of town in one of those fancy gated neighborhoods the former spurs players seem to flock to

Honest answer? They did not expect to make it this far to start season. It was supposed to be their introduction year and get experience. Thats why their roster was not prepared for this. If you had told them they’d be in WCF’s to start year they’d have laughed. They are ahead of schedule.

They’ll make some good off season moves to better construct team. Same happened to OKC 2 years ago, they lost to Mavs but gained experience. Even last year was a bit unexpected but they brought in Caruso and IHart mid-season to get over hump. This year was expected but key injuries have made it much harder.

Spurs will be in the title hunt next year and will get roster right sized. Teams have to manage caps and can’t overdo it too early else it limits window. This year tells them what they need to win it all.

The last 3 are essentially locker room veteran presences that won’t play unless absolutely necessary.

French Bambi is fragile and played baby minutes in regular season. Gotta have a contingency plan of sorts.

They could still use a better backup. Kornet has been a big liability so far this series.

100%. They might use Fox'a contract to get another useful big considering their backcourt is pretty set with Castle, Harper and Vassell.

Bismack Biyombo only being 33 blows my mind. He looked like he was 33 when he played for the Bobcats 15 years ago.
