Why do the current Pittsburgh Pirates stink?

Haven't paid attention to MLB for years, but way back when the Pirates were my favorite team.
What has happened to them? Can someone give me the scoop?

Well, the early 1990s were about the time I lost interest in MLB, so I am uninformed.
Is it lousy ownership, too small a market, etc?

They’ve been awful for a while, their best seasons ended at “play in” games.

Yep, those are out of the late 70s, when I really followed the game.
They came from 3-1 down and won the WS against Baltimore in 1979 in those uniforms.
Sad to see what the Pirates have become. Pittsburgh deserves better.

This guy now makes over a million bucks per start for the NY Yankees because he's one of the best pitchers in baseball. Came up through the Pirates system and they traded him away for practically nothing.
Ownership sucks, front office sucks. Worst organization in all of sports.

The hat is old-time classic and really added to the look, imo.
I think those Pirates of the late 70s had something like 6 different uniform combinations. In that '79 Series, they had at least 3-4 looks, iirc.

Forgot Cole played for Pittsburgh. They’ve stunk ever since they had Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke, Drabek, etc. The 90s were the best. They may have made the playoffs once or twice since then.
