i hate NC just because of the inordinate and inexplicable amount of NC fans in LA. They have zero connection to the school/state other than they think it's cool (kinda like Cubs fans). in fact, i hate them so much i became a duke fan. not enough to care if duke wins/loses just as long as they beat NC.

I became a UNC fan because of my annoying duke roomates, now im just a true fan, i care about all the games. But it still feels great to put it on duke.

that's the difference between you and me.
a) i don't know a single duke fan in LA
b) i don't care about duke so much as they beat NC
c) i focus my energy on teams i actually have a connection with (Saints, LSU)

is Nate James pulling these kids?
I think if Duke can bring in Eric Bledsoe, that can be attributed 100% to Nate. The other guys were solid verbals before James was able to go out and recruit. I'm not really sure about Andre Dawkins, but the other two guys are directly a result of Nolan Smith's positive experience.
Both are from DC and I believe they are both part of the DC Assault AAU team (former members include Beasley, Durant, Nolan, Austin Freeman, etc) and Nolan's step-father is their coach.
However, from what I can tell, Nate James has been very involved in recruiting Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight. Wojo is in charge of Harrison Barnes.

I hate Duke because of floor slapping, Wojo, and because I graduated from UNC.

well duke likes to live up to the "snobby rich white kid" mystique. they've kind of assumed this for themselves in major sports, as most snooty rich kid schools generally have shite for athletics. they do work playing into that stereotype
How exactly have they done this? The football team has been in a slump since Spurrier left, and having a series of aloof and incompetent coaches has only hurt fan support more. However, Cutcliffe has seemed to do a very nice job of building up fan interest.
The non-revenue sports have done pretty well, but they certainly don't have huge followings on campus, like Johns Hopkins Lacrosse.
So does it all boil down to basketball? Is having a team with 3 or 4 white players in the regular rotation living up to the "snobby rich white kid mystique"? It's not as if these guys are scrubs who are given scholarships over more talented players who want to come.
Also, I wish the people who hated Duke would be a little more consistent with their stereotypes. Are the fans dorky losers who were beaten up by bullies all day, but now cheer for basketball team as a way to feel cool, or are they a bunch of cokeheads from Choate and Woodberry Forest who are only going to be successful because of their parents' wealth?
These two stereotypes don't exactly fit together, so at least try to pick one
This isn't really directed at you SFP, but I figured this was the best post to respond to.

Duke insists there is no rivlary with Maryland because we're just some dirty public school beneath them,
This isn't the reason why. After all, Duke's biggest rivalry has been with UNC, a public school. Back when NC State was competitive under Valvano, there was also a pretty big rivalry, but that was before my time.
It's just that the Maryland fans get so worked up for their Duke home game, and their just isn't the same level of animosity when Maryland comes into Cameron.

Shane Battier treated the refs in college worse than Rasheed Wallace has ever done yet he probably never got called for a tech and was worshipped all game by the announcers as the greatest human being alive and the greatest hoops star ever because he could hit a 17ft three pointer.

Which is why Duke players signed the midcourt logo before playing Maryland to take back their house. Obviously, Duke-UNC is the top rivalry, but Maryland has clearly supplanted State as the #2 rival as State has slid into irrelevance. Which is a shame... I HATED State as a kid. Even more than Duke or UNC.
And dirty secret... UNC is a better school. It's far more of a "public Ivy" than those douchebags in Charlotteville.

Than Maryland and NC State? Yeah, that seems to be the case. It seems to have a lot in common demographically with UVA, even down to the guys that have last names for first names and wear seersucker khakis and Croakies in earnest.

My dislike of UNC goes back to the early 80's. With Jordan, Worthy, and Perkins you do not go to the 4 Corners Offense, but Dean Smith did. The old joke...who is the only person that could hold Jordan under 20 pts...Dean Smith.
