Why do so many non-BCS fans talk about BCS money?

for each school that the SEC gets into the BCS, each school in the SEC gets like $1.4M or something
the operating budgets at schools like UF, LSU, Bama are in the $60-70M range (possibly more)
do non-BCS fans REALLY think this $1.4-3M is going to make or break the bank for BCS conferences? do they REALLY think the elite of CFB want to exclude this pittance for the poor of CFB?

not correct.
SEC gets $17.7 million for getting 1 school in the BCS (automatic bid) + another $4.7 million for a 2nd school. This equates to an extra $375,000 per SEC school for a 2nd BCS team.
The big difference is how much the smaller conferences get. Take a look at last year when the MWC & WAC got a BCS team in vs the other non-AQ conferences. Still, we're talking about an extra $500k of revenue per school.

Mountain West - $9.8 million
Western Athletic - $7.8 million
Conference USA - $2.8 million
Mid-American - $2.1 million
Sun Belt - $1.5 million

Why dont the five middie conferences stage their own bowl games with those payouts?
Posted on 11/29/10 at 3:30 pm to xiv
TV revenue generates those payouts.
TCU #3 and Utah #5 wasn't even a nationally televised game, even with ESPN Gameday there. Those middle conferences wouldn't generate the tv $$ needed to come close to those payouts.

So the BCS has to pay out less when they get a mid major? Wouldn't they just want a mid major then and pocket the rest? (Assuming they still would sell out the bowl in the first place).

Why wouldn't they generate that much money?
Posted on 11/29/10 at 3:33 pm to GeauxTigersLee
from that article:
quote:
The Bowl Championship Series will distribute $142.5 million of revenue from its five bowl games, with 81 percent of it — $115.2 million — going to the big six conferences...
Sound a little uneven? Not really, says BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock. Schools from those big six conferences accounted for eight of the 10 teams in the BCS bowls, so those conferences should take roughly 80 percent of the total payout...
Once the BCS pays the $24 million to the coalition conferences, it washes its hands of the distribution. The breakdown of that money among the five conferences, which account for 50 schools, is determined by a complicated distribution method that the coalition leagues voted on four years ago.

How could they?
Spell it out for us non-believers... give a scenario where new bowls set up by the sunbelt, MWC, CUSA, WAC, and MAC would be big money makers - to the tune of say 24 million dollars

is that on top of the $18-ish million?

my point is that this difference is small potatoes in the big picture

$500k is 1% of a $50M operating budget

I'll go ahead and get to my point: they're not good enough. Some reps of these confs wan to be given something that they aren't good enough to earn on their own.

Look at the ratings from ESPN games over the weekend. Nevada had 1 loss and Boise was undefeated, yet they drew the least amount of viewers.
Texas-Texas A&M - 6,691 (x1,000 = viewers)
Pittsburgh-West Virginia - 4,137
Arkansas-LSU - 3,812
Clemson-South Carolina - 3,302
Nevada-Boise State - 2,997
It's also why LSU sells out a 92k stadium and Boise barely sells out a 33k stadium. They sold out on 9/22/10.

Well if they can then they are the laziest and most obnoxious group of shitbags going
Because it would have been a hell of a lot less bitching and moaning over the last ten years if they had set up their own interesting bowls instead of trying to wedge their way into bowls that already had traditional conference affiliations

Totally agree.
Here's the big difference between schools like Utah/Boise and LSU/Alabama. This difference will never be overcome.
quote:
Boise State - $30 M (Athletic Budget) - Ticket Sales + Contributions = $12.1 M
Utah - $31.2 M (Athletic Budget) - Ticket Sales + Contributions = $13.1 M
LSU - $94.5 M (Athletic Budget) - Ticket Sales + Contributions - $66.7 M
Alabama - $100.3 M (Athletic Budget) - Ticket Sales + Contributions = $58.2 M
Ole Miss - $41.3 M (Athletic Budget) - Ticket Sales + Contributions = $18.7 M

It also started at 10:15 Eastern time.
If you want an apples to apples comparison, compare it to another game in the same time slot.

Do you think that there was a reason ESPN didn't slot it for a price time slot?
It was also the only thing on at that time slot.
Texas-Texas A&M - on at same time as NFL
Pittsburgh-West Virginia - nothing else on (sports)
Arkansas-LSU - regional CFB on at the same on ABC & other ESPN game
Clemson-South Carolina - on at same time as GT/UGA & Ole Miss/MSU
