First, you play hard to look good and to want to win.

Second, and more importantly to the individual, why would the player want to tank it, to have has team get theoretical better draft picks? That would make it likely a bit harder to retain your roster spot on the team next year.

Same could be said of teams that play their starters after they have gotten into the playoffs and cannot improve their position.

so players on the roster should knowingly give less effort so the team is in a better position to draft their replacement?
