Why don’t teams that score a TD to go up 7 go for 2 to make it 9, effectively ending the game? Seems like most still kick the PAT.

Across the NFL 2-point conversions are successful at a rate of 47.5%.

Taking the extra point, going up by 8 will win you more games than trying to hit 9.

Let's round it to 50% for simplicity.

You have a 50% chance of going up 9 and icing the game.

If you fail and the other team goes for the win, you have a 25% remaining chance of stopping them for the win and a 25% chance of losing.

If they go for the tie you still have overtime.

Seems the expected value is higher if you go for two.

Just watched it on YouTube because I was curious. Looks like fisher was in such shock that he just threw up a finger out of habit. In other news, the ball went forward about a foot but was too close to overturn the TD.
