The most important part of this argument is that both chants are totally shitty. Why would anyone want claim to it?

The Saints stole St. Aug's cheer not the Bengals cheer.

The St Aug Purple Knight fans have been saying Who Dat forever.

The New York Times article says that the Bengals started using it in the Fall of 1981.

Here is a link showing its use in South Louisiana about ten months earlier (for LSU's 1980-81 basketball team): LINK.

I remember my dad telling me that he remembered as a kid hearing who dat chants at lsu basketball games when The Pistol played. That was Sometime between '68-70.

While Who Dat has more history, it wasn't until the Bengals popularized their phrase that the Saints decided to pull "who dat" from NOLA history and begin using it.

So Who Dey was the instigating chant here.
