This is a perception issue.

Historical studies have shown a dirty little secret about FT%-- its essentially historically flat, varying by about 2% over the last 6 decades. You'll have good ones, you'll have bad ones, but what changes is the volumes of FTA, not the success of the shooters.

NO ONE practices it anymore. And like the guys said earlier.......doesnt make the highlights.

I used to coach my son's team...... they were 7/8 years old. I said they couldnt shoot 3's.(could barely hit the rim anyway).

I had a Mom yell at me that it was not fair that I wouldnt allow her son to shoot 3 pointers during a game.
I said I would rather them work on lay-ups and free throws and mid range shots.

She said NO BODY CARES ABOUT THAT.

Well that makes sense. The more that are being shot, the more that will be missed and it'll actually seem that they're worse at shooting them, which as the poster before you demonstrated, is not the case.

Its not celebrated.

If much were made of it then kids would learn.

Dunks are highlights.

Back in my day, all the players were great at FTs.

Now nobody can hit em.

Updated my post to go back to the 1997-98 season (as far as the source I used goes back) and it's still on the rise.

Teams, on average, are basically shooting 4% better than they were 20 years ago

Ft could have been the difference had they made them.

Or committed a couple less fouls...

I believe the advance stats have shown that being a good FT shooting team isn’t that much of an advantage over an average FT shooting team

Really? I can remember about 10 games from the Rick Stansbury era at State alone that would have been wins instead of losses if we could have at least made 80% of them.

Can you see how many players are shooting <70% that would be interesting to notice trends

That would be. Can probably find it somewhere. Maybe if my afternoon is slow I'll try to find it.

This thread is a bar full of the old guys who watch a couple games come tournament time and start yapping like they're students of the game.

I could only find a reference where I could get 80%+ and only starting in 2008-09.

# of players who shot 80%+ from FT by year:

08-09 - 129
09-10 - 163
10-11 - 159
11-12 - 137
12-13 - 134
13-14 - 181
14-15 - 141
15-16 - 181
16-17 - 183
17-18 - 210

Advanced stats and analytics tell you what happened they don’t tell you why it happened. Thats the fatal flaw with relying to heavily on metrics.

well that's not true at all. They don't tell you what happened. Regular, face value stats do that. They tell you what should have happened and they usually tell you why. That's kind of their whole point

Not at all

They literally exist to tell you why something happened. I mean that's their whole point of existence

No they don’t, basically they take subjective factors and incorporate them into your basic stats but in no way do they tell you why something happened. Ask any coach or listen to any player and they’ll tell you the same.
