Why can't folks just enjoy both the NHL and NBA playoffs?

I say this as a fan of both sports/postseasons (obviously I have more invested in the NBA since my hometown fields a team). Every year, though, it seems like fans of both sports are constantly trying to exalt theirs as better and put down the other. Of my group of irl friends, the hockey-only crowd are the worst offenders, but I'm sure the opposite is true in other circles.

I don't get it--they're both great theater. Part of what makes this time of year great, IMO.

People complain that the playoffs are too long but it's hard to closely follow both without two screens

No I mean I see it on other social media too.

You're probably right in that most do enjoy both, but there's definitely a vocal portion that's all or nothing one way or the other

I just can't get into the NBA playoffs because it is a two horse race. Everybody knew before the season started that GS and Cleveland was going to be in the finals.

On the other hand...the NHL playoffs has been entertaining. To me, playoff hockey is the most entertaining form of playoffs across the major sports. I didn't have a dog in the fight the other night with Pittsburgh and Ottawa in that game 7 but man, I was glued to the TV.

I mean, hockey purist guy can get obnoxious about saying "you just have to get in the building" to appreciate the speed/strength/insanity of the sport. And from day one of the playoffs, it does destroy the NBA in terms of competitiveness. That said, seeing 8 seeds beat 1 seeds trashes the importance of the regular season and home advantage. And in the public consciousness, it's always going to be a regional deal that will never match a great NBA finals.

But, NBA fans making every game and series a referendum on GOATness and historical importance is 1000x more obnoxious than an NBA/NHL playoffs slapfight.

I agree. And I actually enjoy both sports. I need fan of the NBA both regular season as well as playoffs, and a casual fan of hockey. However, there are some people who actually believe that the NHL is a legitimate competitor to the NBA. It's not. and that's quite okay. The NHL is doing well as it is.

To be fair, there are also NBA fans (Cuban) who actually think that the league will overtake the NFL Someday so I guess it's just a sports version of social climbing and thinking you're better than you really are.

Let's Enjoy peak athletes doing great things.

The NBA playoffs started on April 14th and the NHL started a couple a few days before. It is long. I think both sports could cut the first round into 5 games. Of course they could limit the number of teams in the playoffs. For example, 8 teams from each conference goes to the playoffs. To me, that is a waste because most of those 5-8 seeds are boarder lined .500.

Incorrect

It is a legitimate competitor to the NBA in certain towns regions. That type of thinking is what I think Toby is getting after. You made a summary assumption.

Do you think most people in Pittsburgh care about the NBA compared to the NHL and Penguins run? That is by definition competitor.

I don't watch the NBA playoffs unless it's the Spurs or Finals. I watch the NHL playoffs nightly.

I don't mind the length. I think of it as a second season for both, instead of a traditional tournament.

That said, the NBA at least could stand to pare down the number of regular season games to 66 or so. And I wouldn't mind a return to a best of 5 first round.

The current format doesn't really allow for upsets. Which I don't mind, but I would add some drama to the first round at least.

I don't see how the NHL can cut down the playoffs when teams like Nashville make the finals, that's a big part of their appeal.

In the long run, a 5 game first round series isn't going to change to change much in the NBA. Monetarily, it doesn't make any sense. The one thing they could do to increase playoff competition is eliminate seeding by conference.

I'm really confused by this thread. What does this have to do with Jordan > Lebron?

My issue with the NBA playoffs especially the first 2 rounds is there's no set schedule they seem to start series or put games with no reason.

The NHL is set in stone you know when rounds are starting and you know that before the post season starts
