Why are Major League Baseball stadiums so large? I understand some cities have a history of selling out every game every night, but it seems like the majority of cities have thousands of empty seats regularly. Sure they can sell out 15 to 20 games of an 81 game schedule, but is that really a reason to build a stadium for 45,000 people?

Why not build a stadium with the max capacity around 30,000? It would cost (usually the local government) tens if not millions of dollars less, increase scarcity by reducing supply, and create a more intimate atmosphere more often by having sold out stadiums.

For post season play, good teams coming into town, weekend series, etc. it is not a money issue. They get revenue from TV. I mean, Tampa and Oakland basically have minor league attendance numbers.

for awhile there some baseball teams shared the same stadium as pro football teams.

Reds/Bengals
Steelers/Pirates
Rams/Angels ( I think)
A's/Raiders (still going)
Mariners/Seahawks
Browns/Indians
Marlins/Dolphins
Braves/Falcons
Twins/Vikings

i'm sure i'm leaving some off.

They're really not.

When the Dodgers first came to L.A. they played in the Coliseum. 94,000.

Dodger stadium holds 56,000.

Most modern stadiums hold under 50,000.

That's gotta be 275 in left field.

250 ft in left actually 300 in right and 420 to center

And the Dodgers game average attendance the last 10 years has been around 46,000 per game.

That's only 10,000 off capacity (which isn't bad for any attendance)...and Dodger Stadium is the largest capacity stadium in the nation.

It's a fixed asset for the most part and only does good for you. In easier terms, those seats are already built and dont require money being spent in the future besides easy repairs. With that said, when your team makes it to the playoffs, you better believe that gives a stadium so much more revenue to match their expenses when its all said and done.

Rockies played in the old Mile High Stadium in '93 and '94. They moved to Coors Field when it opened for the '95 season.

ETA: Joe Girardi played on that Rockies team in Mile High Stadium.

Busch Stadium III could actually be a little bigger honestly.

Also the Cardinals shared Busch II with the football cardinals and the Rams.

It could, but I dont think theres a good enough reason to do that. Only for playoffs 3-4 weekends a summer
