It's really not worth going after the newer stuff. I stopped collecting around 2001, mainly because sets were getting ridiculous with subsets and prices were getting CRAZY high.

I have always said that I want to get back into it, but only obtain the older cards of all sports (Pre 1985).

Seeing that picture of Eddie Mathews reminds me of how much I always wanted his rookie card. I would actually take him over the Mantle that year, eventhough the Mantle is worth 3-4 times as much.
