re: Who is your NL MVP right now?

They're okay, they have one of the best farm systems in the game and the move to use some of that youth is paying off big time.
Had it been done sooner they'd for sure get a WC.
But you can keep living in June if you want, the rest of us are in August.

That 1 WAR not doing it for you?

This is definitely the most factual thing said in this thread.

Nah I was just teasing the spelling. Was going to use the obligatory "that's racist".

Question... why do you think Votto got the nod for MVP over Pujols in 2010?
Posted on 8/8/18 at 9:45 pm to FulshearTiger
Exactly, so why would an old system and former team from months ago imply how good or bad a team is currently?
Other than you not watching or knowing anything besides your admitted homering of the Cubs?
I'm not a believer that an MVP has to be on a playoff team in any sport, but generally they are and that's fine.

Has a 1B ever won the MVP on a non-playoff team?

Pujols won it the previous two years and 2010 was decent chunk behind those two seasons. He set a bar and then dropped it quite a bit almost across the board.

And nothing to do with cincy winning the division?
Posted on 8/8/18 at 9:50 pm to Schmelly
Nothing? No. Some? Sure.
I would still say his 2010 season being a down year by quite a bit across the board from his back to back seasons made it easier to not give it to him 3 years in a row.

Pujols in 2008
Ryan Howard 2006

It mighta been down fromhis previous 2 but it was every bit as good as Votto’s

I feel like this thread is asking who should win MVP, not who will, so I don’t really care about historical precedent. Historical precedent is pretty spotty for getting the most deserving candidate.
Posted on 8/8/18 at 9:53 pm to Schmelly
Difference between a career year and a "down" year. Do you give it the guy who had a career year or a guy for a 3rd year in a row even though it was quite lower than the previous 2? Tough call.

Exactly,
I wasn't being serious. That comment you made was made on complete and utter homerism. The Cardinals also don't have the very best farm system in baseball. Is it good? Sure. If the major league team was that great and in contention the FO would have probably traded a piece of two to get that player to put the big team over the hump though.
quote:What are you talking about? Me referencing the Reds earlier? I was just pointing out that teams get hot for short periods of time. That's great if you think the Cardinals are a good team and have a legitimate chance of making the playoffs. I would make an extremely large wager with you that the Cardinals will not make the playoffs in 2018.

Ah, okay, so now you're just resorting to the old "you don't know shite about baseball" insult. Good argument.

No where did I come close to saying that it did.

My argument is who would win today. Who will win is a stupid argument cause there’s too much baseball left. Right now is all that can really be argued. And if it ended today, Baez & Yelich are the only ones in the playoffs

Selective reading is pretty shitty.

Well, when it’s that close...you give to the guy on the better team. That’s what would happen today lol. Don’t get me wrong, if y’all come back, Carpenter will prolly win

Yeah ok, my mistake, I thought you said the best farm system and I definitely didn't go back to re-read your post.
You've made such compelling arguments it's really hard to believe that I didn't go back and re-read.

Votto had a higher batting average, OBP, slugging % and OPS. Not the case here.
