re: Which was the better overall product: Cubs/Sox on WGN or Braves on TBS?

TBS won on production - the camera work and sound was too notch
As a personality, Harry was hands down the best. However, TBS had multiple guys with great (and different) personalities. Pete Van Weiren was a walking stats database. Ernie Johnson was a southern version of Bob Euker (I remember going to games at Fulton County and Ernie had a giant fishing net that he would use to catch foul balls that came near the broadcast booth). And then there was Skip. Giving people permission to go walk the dog when the Braves were losing, as long as you patronized the sponsors. When a foul ball went into the stands - "and a fan from Sandy Springs came up with that one."
I think it was the mid 80s and TBS couldn't show games on Wednesday nights because of an exclusivity agreement between MLB and ESPN. Skip would say that tomorrow's game is on Braves radio only. Someone wrote him asking where they could buy a Braves radio.

Not exactly. Jack Brickhouse was the Voice of the Cubs and Hamilton worked with him and thought that he would take over when Brickhouse retired, but Caray was discontented wit the White Sox and the Tribune company brought him in and then after the 1984 season Milo got whacked.
yes, I did not present it totally accurately, but the premise was Milo expected to be the guy and the Cubs made a decision that may have been a bit disingenuous to Milo, but absolutely the right decision.
Milo just had an ego as big as Harry's (for what reason I can't fathom) and was butt hurt until the end. Used to always drop petty comments about the Cubs when he was an Astros broadcaster, he never let it go.

Everyone hated Milo Hamilton.
He did come off as a bit condescending and I never understood why....he seemed to have a higher opinion of himself than most everyone else.

When he was one of the Braves announcers, he got it written into his contract that he announced every Hank Aaron at bat, including of course #715. Many Braves fans were pissed that Ernie Johnson Sr, the beloved Braves announcer, was denied that honor as it was his inning on PBP duty.
I have heard this numerous times, and I believe it.

Harry Cary drunk announcing and the guest 7th inning stretch "Take me out to the Ballgame" singer was a big plus.
People always forget about his first career (pretty long actually) as the play by play guy of the Cardinals. Until he got caught with August Busch's wife.

Day games in the summer as a kid when it was 94° outside hit hard. Especially in the days before 18 different sports networks.

Milo was fired by the Braves at the end of the 1975 season, replaced, in part, by Skip Carey.
And didn't Milo and Harry work together (along with Jack Buck) for a season or two in St. Louis in the 50s?

Yes they worked together one year in St. Louis and Milo was replaced by Joe Garagiola. Some speculated it was because Carey did not want to work in the booth with him.
After one year of working the booth together in Chicago the Cubs started alternating t.v. and radio, Harry would do the first 3 and the last 3 on t.v. while Milo did those innings on radio and the middle 3 on t.v. and Harry would switch over to radio for those middle innings. The fans clamored for more Harry and less Milo and soon got it as Milo moved over to Houston. As I watched some Astros too Milo never got over it - always took shots at Harry whenever he could during Astro broadcasts.

The WGN Cubs broadcasts by miles.
TBS was something you watched in spite of the broadcast team.

I liked Hawk and Wimpy when Big Hurt was in his prime.

The best part was that you could enjoy both, at least when the Cubs were home.

I'm kinda surprised nobody commented on my post...
I loved the Cubs broadcasts, but if you watched the Sox, Hawk would say "gas" on damn near every fastball. It got old after a couple innings

Day games on WGN, hands down. Our antenna could get it from a long ways away
