How high does the war have to be before they start counting it like that.
I can look at 1, 2, and 3 WAR players on any roster and easy eye test would tell me most of them ain't worth $8, $16 and $24 million per year respectively. I did it with my favorite team and can tell you for a fact that maybe only 10% of that number are really worth that for the production they provide.
To bring that back to Bregman who is declining fairly steadily you are asking a team to base his yearly salary on a 6 or 7 year contract on his WAR from last year....no frickin way.

You are obviously trying to project what it will be going forward, not only basing it on previous performance
But to go back to your first point that’s why developing young talent is crucial because it’s not cheap on the open market in free agency

Absolutely not debatable.

That's the calculator, it states 1 WAR is worth 8m. Bregman supposedly wants 30m over 6. He isn't worth that I agree but something around 20m would be worth it for him if he is willing to accept.
I'm not sure if length or value is the holding point at the moment.

I thought it was the contract length. He wants 7 years, and the Astros only offered him 6. Their offer was 6 years for 156 million, and Bregman turned it down

I think it's length. I was only pushing back on the $8 million thing because it seems to me ridiculous. I can make it work for probably 10-15 percent of players in baseball.

The 8ish million number isn't what a player on any team is worth at any given time
It's how much it costs to buy one WAR in free agency

Name some players from whoever your team is like you said

That explains it much better, still think that's a bit high but I'm not a stats guy.

Without that short porch at Minute Maid he would have washed out two years ago.

It would be funny if the Dodgers or Yankees signed him.

Minute maid dimensions take more hits away from bregman and altuve than the Crawford boxes help them.

Bregman was top 50 in WAR, OPS, and Slugging last year
So if you owned a team would you give him a 7-year contract in line with a top 50 player in the league - which would be around $25K a year or $175 million total.
Look, I'm an LSU guy to the core and want only the best for him and I'm not an Astro fan, but looking at it logically - I would not. He'll be 31 when this season starts and his production has been trending downward since 2019.
I'll be happy for him if he gets paid like a top 50 player cause I want all LSU folks to do well, but if I were an owner I would not pay based on what you have done in the past. I think that gets your team in a bind and you are stuck overpaying a guy you can't trade for the better part of the contract because no one will take on that bad contract.

move Paredes to 2nd. Altuve wants to play LF to keep Bregman. And resign the man for what he wants. It's obvious he wants to stay. He just wants to be paid fairly.

Boston is out if the question. They already have a pretty good 3rd baseman

Funny you say that
He was offered 6 yr at $156 M. Most knowledgeable Astro fans would have accepted that as fair, but also quietly hope that he didn’t accept it for the betterment of the team to stay competitive
Not one team to anyone’s knowledge has made a similar offer, and at this point, the Astros offer is likely deemed an overpay
You should stick to being happy with Yankees signings and how well they have turned out for your competitive chances
