I just found out Brent venables has a $54 million buyout AFTER this season due to an extension signed this past offseason.

Norvell obviously just got a huge check.

Jimbo famously is still getting paid off his massive extension

There is literally 1 conference championship amongst those 3 at the place of the extension. A conference championship at FSU used to be expected not extension worthy

At least FSU can say “well bama rumors” but this instant massive extension has to stop.

And yes I understand the irony seeing as I’m an LSU fan but at least we can say we were trying to poach someone.

It would take all ADs to act as one to get it to stop.

If your the only AD to make a stand, your screwed as youll never hire/retain anyone good.

Otherwise, all your doing is killing your own department / career as boosters at other schools will take advantage.

College sports has become a complete disaster.

Norvel

What exactly are you expecting them to do at this point. That shite it out of the package. Coaches are not coming to programs now without those big payouts. It is the norm unfortunately.

Until all of them stop or some kind of standard is set (not sure you want that) then the price of business is just high.

Norvell's extension at least had the threat of the Bama job and he was off an undefeated season. The only potential threat for Venables was maybe if Clemson opened after this season and he wanted a lesser pressure spot.

Should've made my career in trying to be a failed CFB coach..

Apparently the odds of generational money win or lose are decent

Just had this conversation today. It's unbelievable really. Problem is you'll get some micro peen booster like the guy at Texas Tech willing to do it then everyone else will be worried they'll get left behind and follow suit.

Norvell isn't getting a lump sum. He'll get roughly $800k a month through 2031.

They gave Venables the extension two weeks before this season. He wasn't about to quit.

And?

That’s everyone.

We just finished Orgeron.

Jimbo is still getting paid.

Kelly is monthly for 6 years or whatever

That's not everyone. We had to pay Napier 50% of what he was still owed within 30 days of firing him.

I can buy that for a new hire but for say OU or TAMu and an extension?

There ain’t anywhere for them to go.

It’s a changing landscape and the coach salaries are looking to have a retraction in coming years and buyouts as well.. shorter leash to follow.

Any number of schools could offer a guaranteed contract and they'd walk right away from that schools. Just like with players, its a business decision for coaches.

If employer one is offering $7mil a year with $14 guaranteed and employer 2 is offering $7 mil a year with $35 guaranteed, every single one of them is walking their happy arse over to employer #2.

I takes 5 or 6 seasons to get fired, it takes one above average season to get a $75 million buyout. Even if you're previous school was Memphis.

Just like professional sports GM's, college AD's are dumb as frick

Joe Alleva once extended Les miles because he threatened to leave for Arkansas. Some of these “leaders” are incredibly low iq.

Has to be statutory

Either rules from all of the conferences, or federal legislation

No one’s self-sabotaging without it

And how would the LSU fan base have reacted if the LSU AD let Les Miles leave for Arkansas? He'd have been fired within 24 hours. Instead, all he had to do to protect his own job, was spend someone else's money. That's hardly low IQ.

What did Venables ever do as a HC to get that buyout? What has he done since becoming a HC to get that buyout?

If he doesn't come or doesn't stay, tell him to hit the road. You don't get that buyout unless you've done something as a HC.
