When a coach like Chryst at Wisky goes, you know the issue is deeper than the surface.

The guy has done really well, then has a sub-par start and BAM! Gone.
I believe it will get harder and harder. The end of year early recruiting has a lot to do with it. "Gotta' think about recruiting. Let the coach go early so that we look stable."
Add to that the free-wheeling movement of kids from one school to the next. It started ONLY because of Covid. That's over. End it. Go back to when if a kid moved in D1, he had to sit a year. The current policy decimates the prior recruiting and makes the transfer portal a bidding game won only by the few. It sucks. It needs to change for the betterment of the game.

Working for Barry Alvarez must be like working for George Steinbrenner.

He went 8-5 the year after going 13-1 and winning the Orange Bowl
10-4 in 2018. Lost in Rose Bowl
4-3 in Covid year
9-4 last year
COVID year was disappointing, but that was the case for a lot of teams.
He wasn’t ascending, but this sounds like boosters really wanting Jim Leonard to take over more than Chryst suddenly forgetting how to coach

This is it. Just needed an out and the poor start gave it to them. Leonard is their guy and they need to tie him down before someone inevitably snatches him. Feel like promises have been made to Leonard in previous years.

Except Barry Alvarez didn't fire Paul Chryst.

The guy has done really well
In 2017, he gagged in the big ten championship and missed the CFP
2018, was preseason top 5 and went 8-5
Last year, preseason top 15 and finished unranked.
And this is in a pretty awful overall big ten division. Wisconsin should’ve had more to show for his tenure and now they are in free fall.
It makes sense to a program like theirs

Even though Alvarez retired as AD you can bet he still wields a lot of influence

I've always found it amazing that Barry Alvarez has such power in Wisconsin. Dude was good but never elite.
He averaged 7.4 wins and 4.5 losses a year in 16 years. Won 3 rose bowls but none in his last 6 years.
Why is he such a god there?

This post from a Badger fan on another Wisconsin Badger message board sums up very well why I think Chryst was let go. He's a great guy and a loyal Badger but out of touch with many of the facets that go into being a P5 coach these days (blind loyalty to coaches like Joe Rudolph & Chris Haering who weren't cutting it, fan/booster relations, not into tune with the requirements of maintaining a capable recruiting staff, dealing with the media, NIL & the transfer portal issues). This was tolerated so long as he won. After back-to-back blowouts (including one at home to your former coach), a home loss to Washington State when you are favored by 17 and an embarrassing coaching mistake made againt your chief rival (Minnesota) in 2021 that left everyone scratching their heads and that leash gets extremely tight. I really liked Chryst and am appreciative of his time as coach but he had to go, IMO.

6. I thought the hiring of Paul Chryst was a logical hire, even though I never liked his style and constantly maintained that a head coach needs more "pizzazz ." He won me over simply by winning games and lining up highly ranked recruiting classes (which I NEVER thought was possible). If you can win 13 games, win the Orange Bowl and get us our highest ranked class ever, I accepted that I was wrong and that he was a good coach. We could search Buckyville on the phrase "as long as he's winning" and probably get 1000 hits. What we're seeing today is when your program is out of step in so many areas (many of them small), that leash gets tight awfully fast when "as long as he's winning" goes away. He just didn't build up much good will, other than with his wins.

Yeah, but he was seen as some savior. Wisconsin was so average before he arrived...people see Wisconsin now with rose tinted glasses like THEY SHOULD BE GOOD...when it was never like that before.

By the end of the 1989 season, the Wisconsin football program was in disarray, shouldering a debt of over $2 million and with only 30,000 fans attending games at the 77,000-capacity stadium.
Before Alvarez, they hadn't won a Conference title since 1962. And in 1993 under Alvarez won their 1st Rose Bowl game EVER!
And gave them a Heisman winner in Ron Dayne winning their first outright Big10 Title since 1962.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves on this site
Why say this if you’re not gonna come over the top and say who did it then?
If you were so hell bent on saying ‘nah, you’re wrong’, would it have killed you to at least say who it was that actually did it?
Or were you just trying to be a prick?

Someone needs a nap. Chris McIntosh has been the Wisconsin AD for over a year.

Alvarez is basically K State's Bill Snyder. Before him, Wiscy was a dogshit program.
After him, it seems they are reverting back to their previous shittiness.
Alvarez was basically running the football program as AD... That's why the program was so consistent during his entire tenure as HC/AD.
And yeah, some may say he still wields a lot of power now that he's retired, but hes not emersed in the day to day details like he used to be.
It will be very interesting to see if anyone can turn the program around again without Alvarez at the helm.

Simmer down toughy. If you are going to post on a sports message board don't be ignorant. Do better next time and quit posting like a fricking idiot.

Do better how exactly?
All I did was call someone out for being a prick? Y’all think everyone keeps track of who the heck Wisconsin’s AD is? frick, half of the board assumes Alvarez is still running the show
