What’s with all these professional NBA players missing open layups

I understand if it’s contested, but night after night, it looks like we are getting poor play down low.

As compared to what? Fg% inside 3 feet is quite a bit higher now than it was in 2001, for example.

The best athletes in the world are not immune to pressure.

There's no fundamentals in the NBA today.
Everyone runs with the ball...dribbling is optional.
It's dunk or long-range bomb.
When is the last time you saw someone make a bank-shot?
The glass is like poison to them...why even have it there?
As you said, they can't even make layups.

Everyone says this kind of stuff, but last year was the highest FT% of all time.
Turnovers are also historically low, even adjusting for pace, with last year being the lowest ever too.

It’s not any easier to go off the glass than shooting it straight in.
Obviously with shots around the rim it’s preferred, but unless you’re somewhere around the block then the bank shot is pointless.

Those guys miss the days of old, unathletic white guys dribbling, passing and shooting off the glass.
None of this high flying, long range bombing shite!

They are rushing.
They never practiced at playoff intensity.

Pretty cool article...

What they uncovered (shown here) was that areas on the wing — between the free-throw area (most of that inner rectangle) and the outermost three-point line — contained pockets (shown in the bottom-most graphic) where a bank shot was much more likely to go in than with a direct shot.
Up top, you can see the area that had the success rate for bank shots. It makes sense that the percentage drops so low on the outer area since you have such little surface area of the backboard to utilize.
Below that, you see the hot spots for converting direct shots.
Finally, at the bottom, you can see the areas (denoted in red) that had the highest increase in success rate with bank shots over direct shots. Indeed, these areas are usually off to the side of the straight-away area, where you’re more likely to get a good angle at the backboard.

Pretty cool article...
People who shoot bank shots are people who have more or less perfected that shot in their game... like Tim Duncan.
Whereas the data for direct shots includes everyone... both good and bad shooters.
So I would argue that the data is most likely skewed.
