re: What’s the real reason for poor non-playoff bowl attendance?

I’ll reiterate…I’m not really even talking about the schools. Looked like plenty of Texas and Michigan fans in the stands. The upper decks are not where fans sit when they purchase through the school. I guess my question is simple…are there not a few thousand randoms in Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, and any other bowl metro that want to go to a college bowl game?

Houston Bowl had 64,000 people this year, definitely the exception to the rule
I saw that you can still buy CFP orange bowl tickets for $41

Wrong. I just made a thread about this the other day.
Average stadium capacity for all bowls was around 89% in the 90's to mid 2000's. In this case let's just take the Gator bowl as an example starting in 2004.
2004 #23 Maryland vs #20 West Virginia. 79k
2005 #17 FSU vs unranked West Virginia. 70k
2006 #12 VT vs Louisville 64k
2007 #13 West Virginia vs unranked GT 68k
2008 Texas Tech vs Virginia 60k
2009 Nebraska vs Clemson 67k
2010 FSU vs #18 West Virginia 84k (record for Gator Bowl)
Playoffs begin after 2014
2015 56k for Iowa vs Tennessee
2016 43k
2017 41k
2018 38k
2019 45k
2020 57k
2021 25k
2022 67k but that was with Notre Dame
2023 40k
2024 31k
It just used to mean more. The biggest problem was probably adding way too many bowl games but I had to address the ones in the other thread saying bowl games never had good attendance.

And this year's Gator bowl was 31,290k

It’s always been rare for non major bowls to be completely filled
How do you even have 3 likes?? You are so wrong. Do you not believe in past bowl game capacity numbers? They used to ALL(on average) be nearly 90% full!

If the players aren't going to show up and play why should the fans show up and watch?
Before all the bs consolation bowls used to be fun to attend.

(1) No one has today off. The modern employee has ferwer days off than your neighborhood mailman; and
(2) This whole system where we send the same 3-5 SEC teams against the same 3-5 Big Ten teams is just stupid. We've all seen every possible appealing matchup by this point Why in the world would either of these teams pay to see their teams in the same state, within 50 miles of the last bowl.
If bowls were played at more unique sites (ie. Wrigley, Marlins Park, Busch, etc) it could salvage things for a while but we'd eventually end up in the same place

Get us some new bowl tie ins. I would rather go to the Hawaii bowl than go back to Tampa or Orlando.

I wonder if the goofy names of some of these bowls have had any small effect on their prestige.
I think that’s certainly part of it.

I couldn’t get over how small the crowd was at the Music City Bowl yesterday. The Vols have sold out the game in their other appearances, couldn’t have been 40k there yesterday. Hell, Titans tickets were going for more than this game.
It has to do with the direction the team is moving. 4 years ago, Heupel’s first season, the Vols were on the upswing and fans were excited after the Pruitt era to be there. Yesterday was just the opposite… the fan base couldn’t care less. It was also brutally cold yesterday. The 2011 game was very comfortable weather wise…I was there…it was around 60 degrees.

TN has drawn at least 68,000+ fans for Music City Bowl appearances until yesterday. I think the playoff has killed interest in other bowls.
