His point is the team, or teams, who just missed out on making the NHL playoffs would also have a shot as well which is why the regular season is relevant.

the college basketball regular season being irrelevant view is annoying and simplistic. "everyone gets in the tournament and has a chance!!!"
except, no, not at all. a top 10 team will win the title per usual and the seeding and regional placement matters a shite ton.
I'm not saying it matters on the level of CFB, but it matters a ton.

I think the NBA Reg season only sucks bc of how lopsided the league is right now. But that isn't changing anytime soon with how it is structured.
a first rd bye + moving from 8 to 6 teams would certainly make the reg season more important but the playoffs are great so who really cares.
