I never said 'traditional power.'
FWIW, for the sake of this discussion, 16-17 years is a long time. If you make a tournament 15 times in a row, it's reasonable to be surprised that a team 'sucks'.
This wouldn't be any different than if Gonzaga basketball started a year like shite.

I remember watching college baseball in the 80's and Stanford was the "new power" at that time...it actually took them the late 90's to get that long-term respect...
Stanford Baseball CWS appearances...
1953, 1965, 1967, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014
It took the 90's for sportswriters to jump on board...
Rice:
1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008
It takes more than a decade to be a power.

Stanford was a well known baseball school in the mid 80's

"Traditional" College baseball powers are:
USC
Arizona State
Clemson
Florida State
Oklahoma State
Texas
Arizona
Miami
Cal State Fullerton...(maybe)
Stanford (most likely)
By strict football definitions...
As far as traditional can go...and that usually means being really good for 30-50 years + and being great before 2000's, 1990's,1980's, 1970's, 1960's...or modern era. That's the definition of traditional.
College Baseball is basically 1950's-Present.
Just like basketball...
Rice has definitely been a power - and the reason for the thread...but apparently they stunk for 80% of their history.
Last 15 or 20 years is not the college football definition of "traditional power".

Win one CWS and appear in a few more
Schools with more CWS appearances than Rice in the last 20 years:
Cal State Fullerton
LSU
Miami
Texas

They are not the U or LSU or Texas
Texas has just one more CWS appearance than Rice does in the last 20 years and LSU just 2 more. Miami has 3 more

Deichmann crushed their souls last season. Still struggling to recover.

No one said traditional until you did, dude.

Great...you named some teams that haven't done shite in quite a while...but thanks for YOUR list of traditional powers, which was only brought up by you anyway. But it's good to know that Fullerton, a team that's won titles under multiple coaches, and was good since the 70's, is a 'maybe', but schools with no titles like FSU and Clemson are 'traditional powers', as well as USC, a school that has won one championship in the last 30+ years.

Lol...ok. Thanks, I guess?
And college baseball modern history didn't start in the 50's...it would probably be a bit later.

It sucks seeing the Graham era end like this but he's 80, there's a point when stewardship of a program turns into negligence.

Truthfully how close to you follow college baseball and how long have you
Posted on 3/21/17 at 9:20 pm to Aristocrats of BBall
wayne graham should've retired years ago and let pierce take over, pierce recently was the hottest name in coaching, graham is like 92 and still wants to coach, he should've stepped down long ago, I dont see how he can possibly still hit the recruiting trail
Posted on 3/21/17 at 9:23 pm to dabigfella
As of 3 years ago Graham was still a really sharp cat. No idea now...
