I watch them every day. It is quite simple....get ahead and hit him with breaking ball and watch him fan at balls in the dirt. It's damn near dreadful to watch. He has his moments, but I shudder when it's a clutch situation.
Bruce is a top 25 outfielder, and he's underpaid considering his wins above replacement. If his biggest flaw is swinging at breaking balls, that's easily correctable. Yes his streaks have been hard to handle, but he's a Mike Stanton with less K's.

Jay Bruce is my favorite player in the game
Drew Stubbs on the other Hand gives me fits. He is so damn talented but seems to be going by the way of Adam Dunn with his undisciplined at bats

I think this bastard has been overrated ever since ESPN hopped on his nuts right before his big league debut!!!!! People bought the hype because ESPN mainly Baseball Tonight (Yes You John Kruk) billed him to be a "once in a generation type player"
JAY BRUCE has been OVERRATED for 5-6 years, YOU CAN KEEP HIM
sorry just venting

His OPS begs to differ. Fwiw, most of us don't blindly listen to ESPN.

Me thinks Bruce would make a fine looking woman.

Stubbs is a whole other story. Maybe we could teach him to drag bunt.

Jay Bruce is the next Adam Dunn.

Jay was a career .308 hitter in the minors and he can play D. So no.... he isn't

There were stretches last year where I began to wonder about this but then he comes out this year with much much better splits vs the Lefties and it's clear he is working on what he needs to in order to improve

Even if he was the next Adam Dunn (which he is not), then that is a good thing.

No it's not. Adam Dunn is the worst hitting major league regular in the game. How that guy still has a job is amazing to me

Yea and his previous 6 seasons he averaged. 40 HR 101 RBI's and 94 Runs with a .914 OPS. If Bruce avg's this over the next 6 years. I'll be ok with that.
Factor in his GG defense, which no one seems to want to do, and thats pretty fricking awesome.

I am talking about his career, obviously not 2011.
From 2004 to 2010, he had 38 or more home runs. His OBP was routinely in the upper .300's. His OPS is generally a shade under .900. Yeah, his defense is dreadful and he has disappeared this year, but career wise, he has been a very good ballplayer.

Dunn just never seems to want to make an adjustment at the plate and his gaudy power numbers to me have always been overshadowed by his strike outs and lack of clutch hitting
This year it seems to have came to a head

Bruce has nearly identical numbers to Pete Incaviglia at the same age.
Bruce is hitting 268/346/497 (OPS+ of 128) compared to Incy's age 24 season of 249/321/467 (OPS+ of 117). Also, Incy lead the league in strikeouts and already played terrible defense. So Bruce has a 20 point edge in every slash stat, has more speed and isolated power, can play the field better, and he strikes out far less.
Other than that, they are excatly the same.
ETA: I know Incy pops up as one of Bruce's comps through age 23. So does Reggie Jackson and Barry Bonds. But I think their age 24 seasons are showing divergence.

Okay, he strikes out a shite ton. However, he maintains a high OBP, so it does not really bother with his level of production.
Lack of clutch hitting? He played in Cincy on a non-contender for most of his career. How clutch can you be on a 70 win team?
Posted on 7/26/11 at 10:44 am to Vicks Kennel Club
Not trying to be picky, but didn't Bill James come out against clutch saying it really doesn't exist?

Well once again Jay Bruce steps to the plate as the tying run. Fans on a breaking ball out of the zone.
